One question everyone is asking is , why does there need to be a new VAAD? How will this help us?
Many longtime Lakewood residents are looking to move to nearby towns to escape the higher taxes and higher cost of housing being marketed to people moving from Brooklyn. As people move out to Jackson and Toms River, the costs are starting to rise there as well. But it is very simple to move a block or two further away from Lakewood and get an affordable home. Unfortunately the VAAD insists on supporting a plan of irresponsible building in Lakewood. They claim that the need for building is for the Yungeleit of Lakewood. In reality the building is for attracting people outside of Lakewood to move here in order to enrich a select few developers. Ironically this causes the cheaper housing in nearby towns to become an inconvenience for the Yungeleit that would like to move there. As dense development becomes built in Lakewood, it becomes nearly impossible to move further out into towns that need to drive into Lakewood for schools that they already attend or for shopping. Even in Lakewood, an
affordable home down route 88 becomes inconceivable as what was once a 5 minute trip for food shopping, becomes a half hour drive.
The VAAD L"TZORCHEI TZIBUR is dedicated to working with our local politicians to make sure that developers only be allowed to build responsibly. We want to see changes in infrastructure and traffic studies before new large projects are allowed. Some people want an end to all building. While that may not be a realistic option, we can make sure that all developments built do not hurt current residents or the ability for young couples to find more affordable housing.
When our neighboring towns see that we are being responsible with our growth, they will be more welcoming towards their new neighbors.
We will be sending out sample ballots with suggestions of who you can vote for in order to realize these goals.
Thank You
