News Tidbits
Many problems have been found with the CAFRA application requesting 936 homes and 936 basements on the Eagle Ridge Golf course. Over 600 letters were sent to the NJ DEP requesting a public hearing. Mayor Coles said that he has no intention of allowing that many homes to be built there.

It has come to our attention that the township committee may have made many zoning changes without sending notice to properties within 200 feet. We have requested proof of notice (if any) for a list of changes and once we determine which ones were supposed to be noticed and weren't we will proceed with legal action to have those changes declared null and void.

A new CAFRA application was just filed for 222 residences within 6 apartment buildings, a 2 story retail and office unit and a 2 story shul in industrial park near the airport and near the other recent CAFRA application for 263 homes.
There will be a planning board meeting on Tuesday Feb. 21 at 6:00. It includes 4 Oak Street applications, and 8 items for public hearings including one for 12 lots on Netherwood Drive.

The Master Plan Subcommittee for Housing Density will have a meeting on Tuesday Feb. 28 at 6:00. Everyone is urged to attend to ensure that no new density is proposed in the masterplan.

Jersey City considers No Knock registry for aggressive realtors

From NJ.com The City Council will consider a "no knock" law aimed at aggressive real estate investors this week, with council members saying the measure will protect longtime residents. "Many of the real estate investors buying properties in Jersey City are Orthodox Jews, and it has led to some tensions between that community and longtime residents." ....
Rabbi Avi Schnall, director of Lakewood-based Orthodox Jewish organization Agudath Israel of America, was in Jersey City praising council members for the no-knock ordinance. Schnall said the influx of Orthodox Jewish investors in Jersey City was giving a bad name to Orthodox families who have moved here to raise their families. read more at NJ.com

LSTA parents of non mandated kids must pay up

Parents whose kids are getting courtesy non mandated busing were asked to pay up the $150  per child fee for the LSTA. A point of contention since the Township paid the full courtesy buying costs for all non mandated public school kids.  Notes were sent home informing parents if the fee is not paid they children will not be allowed on the bus. LSTA is short funds and in order to function and pick up all courtesy kids they have to charge the fee. Not all schools are on board. apparently some mood did not want their parent body to shell out another fee.

Hamodia: Lakewood Township Adjusts Process for Approval of New Construction

More talk from politicians, traffic and congestion continues, master plan committee stacked with developers and  keeps dragging on while projects continue with no infrastructure.

Hamodia- LAKEWOOD - Mayor Ray Coles and the Township Committee have initiated new protocols that they say will give residents more of a voice in how development plans are approved in the Orthodox boom-town of Lakewood. Procedures will require those presenting plans for construction to give clear details of what their finished products will look like, as well as to commit to cover related infrastructure costs.

“Some residents felt that the boards had become a rubber stamp for developers for too long,” Mayor Coles told Hamodia. “We are not looking to use this as a way to slow things down, but to make sure that neighbors know what they are getting themselves into when the planning board approves a project.”

He added that in the past, developers often submitted very vague plans and as such were not required to take on the construction of infrastructure such as sidewalks, which ended up being mandatory according to final construction. In other instances, building projects led to far more congestion than expected.

“We are trying to streamline the process to make it more layperson- friendly, that people listening can understand what they are getting themselves into,” Township Committee member Meir Lichtenstein told Hamodia.

Mayer Kesserman, president of Kesserman Construction Group and Adeer Builders Inc., a local developer, told Hamodia that he had not yet reviewed the updated checklist for submitting plans, but welcomed the idea of comprehensive guidelines before projects, even without variances, being approved.

“Definitely the township leaders have to be able to add more insight and involvement and encourage talent into the kind of development that goes on in Lakewood,” he said.

The Township Committee was also working to ensure that those living near prospective construction are given the opportunity to hear proposals and “to have their voices heard.”

As Lakewood grows, so does congestion in the town. In response, the township has initiated a “master plan” committee to evaluate how the town can effectively plan for future growth.

“They are taking a general overview of the town’s development, as well as needs like infrastructure, open spaces, schools and so on,” said Mr. Lichtenstein.

The committee, formed last year, is expected to have its report complete by the end of 2017.

Mr. Kesserman agreed that broader planning could be greatly beneficial.

“The town must be able to focus on how to develop a suburban community where houses have proper privacy as well as safe access to sidewalks, parking and access to roads,” he said. “It’s not that the town is overdeveloped. In a way it’s underdeveloped … I really believe if planning would be done a little smarter, we could build for even more people and the town would be nicer, too.” Hamodia.com

NJ. com  Republican gubernatorial frontrunner Kim Guadagno took to Twitter late Tuesday to accuse Democratic front-runner Phil Murphy of comparing President Donald Trump to Adolf Hitler three months ago, and demanded he apologize. see video below. Ocean County Republican Chairman George Gilmore responded according to a report in SNN "On Tuesday, at a Republican governor’s candidate forum in Ocean County, home to one of the largest Orthodox Jewish population centers in the world outside of Israel, Ocean County Republican Chairman George Gilmore expressed disappointment with the words Murphy chose to describe President Trump.
“Mr. Murphy set the tone for the 2017 gubernatorial campaign,” Gilmore said. “It’s unfortunate that he chose those words to compare our President to a man who killed 6 million innocent Jewish people during the Holocaust and millions more.”

Turx to AlJezzira on Trump, "I've always felt that we had this mutual understanding,"

$
0
0
AJN Before President Donald Trump's infamous 76-minute press conference on February 16, Jake Turx was a relatively unknown Washington reporter for Ami magazine.

But that changed dramatically when Turx, who is visibly Jewish but describes himself as a "post-labellist millennial", stood up after Trump pointed to him, seeking a "friendly reporter".

Turx, who covered both the Trump campaign and that of his opponent Hillary Clinton, was well known to the president.

"I've always felt that we had this mutual understanding," Turx, 30, told Al Jazeera. "That he trusted me."

That included post-debate interviews in the so-called "spin room" where candidates talk to reporters. Trump, Turx points out, was always very generous with his time for the young reporter.

So when the president - who had already faced a barrage of questions about his ties to Russia, the resignation of his national security adviser and his self-perceived mistreatment by the media - scanned the room full of reporters, he spotted Turx, whose Twitter handle @JakeTurx was on his kippah.

"Watch how friendly he is," Trump told everyone, hoping to get a softball question. And, he did.

Anti-Semitic attacks

Turx says he prefers not to ask questions about anti-Semitism, because it's simply too obvious, but the story of threats against Jewish Community Centres (JCC) in the US wasn't getting the coverage he had hoped.

"People weren't talking about it and I'd gotten a lot of requests and private messages from teachers and faculty members at various JCCs around the country begging me to bring up the issue," Turx says.

There were reports of 48 threats against Jewish community centres across the country in January alone. The New York City Police Department reported a doubling in the same month of hate crimes against Jewish citizens.

So Turx identified himself, then started with a statement:

"Despite what some of my colleagues have been reporting, I haven't seen anybody in my community accuse either yourself or anyone else, anyone on your staff of being anti-Semitic," he said politely.

And then, the statement that changed everything:

"However, what we are concerned about and what we haven't really heard being addressed is an uptick in anti-Semitism and how the government is planning to take care of it."

After mentioning reports of bomb threats, Trump had heard enough.

WATCH: America\'s media under Trump - An ominous start

"You see, he said he was going to ask a simple easy question. And it's not," the president huffed.

Turx was baffled. "I was trying to figure out, 'What did I do wrong?'" he explains now. "Did I say the wrong word?"

Apparently, he did. Trump told him to sit down.

"I am the least anti-Semitic person that you've ever seen in your entire life," he said.

Turx tried to interject in an attempt to clarify that had not meant to accuse the president of anti-Semitism.

"Quiet! Quiet! Quiet!" Trump told him. “See? He lied about. He was going to get up and ask a straight, simple question."

Turx sat down, puzzled by the exchange. But his place in history was now firmly cemented.

The messages of support and hatred poured in. His Twitter feed lit up, earning 10,000 more followers.

The back-and-forth played across the world on social media and fed into a perception that, rightly or wrongly, already existed: Trump wasn't taking the threats seriously.

In January, the White House faced condemnation for failing to mention, in a statement on International Holocaust Remembrance Day, the six million Jews who died.

Five days after his moment with Turx, Trump finally addressed the issue during a visit to the National Museum of African-American History in Washington, DC.

"The anti-Semitic threats targeting our Jewish community and community centres are horrible and are painful, and a very sad reminder of the work that still must be done to root out hate and prejudice and evil," he said.

The next day, Vice-President Mike Pence visited a Jewish cemetery in St Louis that had been vandalised and helped clean it up.

"There is no place in America for hatred, prejudice, or acts of violence, or anti-Semitism," he said.

Turx shrugs off the role he played in sparking all of this. The father of three who grew up in both Los Angeles and New York would rather be talking about the budget or school vouchers but he's fully aware that sometimes you just have to go there.

"If you're a dentist and you have to pull out the tooth of a child, you just pull out that tooth," he says of his memorable moment with the commander-in-chief. "You do your job and stay honest to the people you are out there working on behalf of."
