Schools tell parents no courtesy busing if you dont pay the $150 fee

$

Schools sent home notes to parents of non mandated children informing them they must sign up now and pay the $150 per child fee to the LSTA if they want busing next year. The Lakewood Cheder so far has not enforced this and did not bill or charge any of its parents for the $150 fee. As things stand all public school students who are not mandated are receiving courtesy busing free of charge paid for by Lakewood township. Children in Private schools and yeshivos depends which school you go to if they are enforcing the fee. Not clear why the LSTA is using the schools as proxy and not reaching out directly to all private school parents.

Township to pass defeated Fire budget by enacting small reduction

Lakewood taxpayers voted down the 2017 fire district budget.  The Township Manager has recommended that the defeated budget of $5,029,295 be
amended by a reduction in expenditures of $10,000 to result in a budget of $5,019,295. In order for the budget to pass after it was voted down there has to be a reduction. The township is expected to pass a resolution that will only took out ten thousand dollars from a budget of over 5 million dollars. Last year after the pubic voted down the budget the township reduced expenditures by $238K. Now they only reduced it by 10K and this comes after asking Tax payers to approve close to 200k for capital improvement projects just after they raised the fire tax from 0.058 to 0.070
See resolution HERE and below

1. That the defeated Lakewood Township Fire District Budget be amended by a reduction in expenditures:

The total amount to $10,000.00 appropriations reduced

Christie Slashes private school security funding

Agudah News- Agudath Israel’s NJ Director Calls for Grassroots Response as Governor Christie Inexplicably Slashes Private School Security Funding

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie’s decision on March 15th to eliminate security funding for nonpublic school students has sent shock-waves throughout the private school community. The proposed budget cuts left many observers struggling to comprehend how the governor could leave 150,000 children virtually unprotected during a time when anti-Semitic incidents have skyrocketed to unprecedented levels.

Ironically, Governor Christie’s proposed budget was released just as Rabbi Avi Schnall, director of Agudath Israel of New Jersey, was in an Assembly budget hearing, praising the governor for increasing security funding just a few months earlier.  Rabbi Schnall was referencing the Secure Schools for All Children Act which passed the legislature by unanimous vote and was signed by Governor Christie in September.  The new law would have raised the per-child allocation from $50 to $75.

Rabbi Schnall also lauded the bill’s sponsor, Assemblyman Gary Schaer of Passaic, for standing up for New Jersey’s private school community by crafting what he described as “monumental” legislation that addressed the critical need to provide all New Jersey schoolchildren with schools that are both safe and secure.

Rabbi Schnall said that he was stunned by Christie’s proposed budget.

“With bomb threats pouring in at JCCs all over the country, acts of anti-Semitism taking place nationwide and Jewish cemeteries being vandalized, there could not be a worse time to cut security funding for schoolchildren,” remarked Rabbi Schnall.

Rabbi Schnall noted that by approving an $11.2 million allowance to protect private school children this past fall, the governor had sent a clear message to Garden State residents that the safety of private school children was no less important than that of their public school counterparts. He asked, “what message is the governor now delivering by eliminating the entire nonpublic school security program?”

With the New Jersey Legislature set to review the newly-released budget, Rabbi Schnall called on the public to express their opposition to Governor Christie's decision to eliminate security funding for nonpublic school students. Constituents should call their Assembly Members and Senators and ask them to reinstate security funding for nonpublic school students.

Lakewood’s Blizzard That Wasn’t

Hamodia article by Mordechai Wincorn

LAKEWOOD - Despite dire predictions of a blizzard that most felt would surely cancel schools and grind the town to a near-halt, most Lakewood residents had a wet but mostly normal day on Tuesday as shifting weather patterns turned the snowstorm to a heavy rain accompanied by strong winds before dawn.

On similar occasions in the past, when predictions of heavy snow did not pan out, most students in the town were left without busing. On Tuesday, regular transportation for nearly all of the town’s mosdos came as a welcome change.

“I was pleasantly surprised. Not only did my sons have busing, but even the Shacharis bus made its pickups. I’m sure the kids were disappointed not to get the snow day they were waiting for, but it’s much better that they’re learning, and easier for everyone this way. It is certainly not what any of us expected,” said one father.

The reversal did not come without effort. Lakewood’s public schools had decided to close the day before, amidst stern warnings from the state. In past years, transportation for mosdos was wholly dependent on the Board of Education and was tied to the public school schedule. Since the beginning of the school year, however, legislation has taken effect that transferred all transportation for non-public schools to the Lakewood Student Transportation Authority (LSTA), a consortium that administers bussing for the yeshivos and girls’ schools.

“Baruch Hashem, the kids are learning today,” Avraham Kraweic, Director of LSTA, told Hamodia. “We waited till as late as we could to look at the situation and make a decision and it paid off. We are thankful that we have a good relationship with our vendors and their efforts were incredible.”

At 5 a.m. Tuesday morning, representatives of LSTA, the township, police, public works, and the mosdos held a conference call to evaluate the situation on the roads and see if conditions were safe enough to provide transportation. After deciding in the affirmative, LSTA, bus companies, and school administrators snapped into action and were able to provide regular transportation to nearly all non-public school students.

Not everyone escaped the storm’s wrath. Heavy winds downed trees and some electrical wires around town, and in the late morning over a thousand residents were temporarily left without power, including several schools in the Oak Street area. In another act of the newly found flexibility in transportation arrangements, several girls’ schools, including Bais Tova, Tiferes Bais Yaakov, and Bais Kaila bussed their students home at around noon, not knowing when electricity would be restored.

“I happened to have been home when my daughter’s school called that they were sending the kids home, but for mothers who were at work, I’m sure it was a major pain in the neck,” said one mother.

While most roads remained passable, heavy rains caused flooding in several areas and the section of Squankum Road near Bais Medrash Kol Shimshon was under several feet of water for much of the day.

Committeeman Meir Lichtenstein told Hamodia that public works personnel had teams driving around town throughout the day looking for drains that needed to be cleared of debris and residual snow banks.

The township had prepared to meet various scenarios.

Plows were initially sent out to clear overnight snowfall, but as temperatures rose, they were quickly pulled and replaced with equipment to control flooding.

“Now we’re working on treating the roads so that all of this doesn’t ice over by the morning,” said Mr. Lichtenstein. “I think everyone knows that it takes a little patience and people have to make safe decisions. But, we saw how fluid the situation was and the town tried to be as flexible and pro-active as possible to change our resources and adapt as quickly as we could.” HAMODIA

MARKET TEMPERATURECool
Homes may stay on the market for longer.
Buyers can have more negotiating power.

The median home value in 08701 is $305,000. 08701 home values have gone up 5.0% over the past year and Zillow predicts they will rise 3.2% within the next year. The median list price per square foot in 08701 is $156, which is lower than the Lakewood Township average of $157.

Foreclosures will be a factor impacting home values in the next several years. In 08701 1.0 homes are foreclosed (per 10,000). This is the same as the Lakewood Township value of 1.0 and also lower than the national value of 1.4

Mortgage delinquency is the first step in the foreclosure process. This is when a homeowner fails to make a mortgage payment. The percent of delinquent mortgages in 08701 is 0.0%, which is higher than the national value of 0.0%. With U.S. home values having fallen by more than 20% nationally from their peak in 2007 until their trough in late 2011, many homeowners are now underwater on their mortgages, meaning they owe more than their home is worth. The percent of 08701 homeowners underwater on their mortgage is 0.1%, which is the same as Lakewood Township at 0.1%.
