Pending lawsuits has forced the NJ  dept of education to back off their threat and keep to their deal regarding courtesy busing. The referendum was exposed as nothing more than good old extortion. The monitor attempted to get more tax money for the districts spending woes by threatening to cut courtesy busing.  Busing will continue only for the next 4 months. After that the games begin again.

Cory Booker Scrubs Mentor Shmuley From His Memoir

Observer.com - Sen. Cory Booker retaliates against close friend Shmuley Boteach over Iran deal criticism. The Garden State Democrat released his first book, United, recounting personal stories of his “political and personal awakening.” Mr. Booker’s message is one of cooperation—working together for the common good. With more than six pages acknowledging people to whom the senator is “indebted,” Rabbi Shmuley Boteach stands out as a glaring omission. He’s entirely unmentioned in the book. The well-known rabbi (who writes frequently for the Observer) is known to have enjoyed an unusually close friendship with the senator for more than 20 years, since they met at Oxford University, where Mr. Booker was a Rhodes Scholar and Mr. Boteach headed the prestigious school’s L’chaim Society. When a reporter brought the omission to Mr. Boteach’s attention, the rabbi wasn’t surprised the senator did not acknowledge his impact on Booker’s life, explaining, “It’s no secret that our relationship has become very strained, as I was shocked that Cory voted for the Iran deal.” Since
September, Boteach has publicly voiced his disappointment with Booker. This comes after he publicly reassured the Jewish community and supporters of Israel that Booker would “do the right thing” regarding the Iran nuclear deal. “If Cory expected me to be silent while playing politics with the future of my people, I could not do that.
If he expected me, in the name of our soul-friendship and my 25 years of dedication and personal loyalty, to remain silent while Iran is given an astonishing sum to kill people and threaten Jews with a second Holocaust, he could have never have expected that,” explained Boteach. “As for the omission, it’s a small price to pay for speaking out for the protection of my people. I understand that Cory is upset that I criticized his decision. I understand that he feels that in the name of friendship I should have been silent. He’ll just have to get over it. Protesting incitement to genocide transcends every consideration, including what is to both of us a very special friendship.” Read more at The Observer

Matzav - Busing crisis averted, for now

Matzav.com Lakewood, NJ  – The courtesy busing crisis has been resolved, but for the moment, no one will say how, reports Shannon Mullen for the Asbury Park Press.

The resolution of the crisis was made clear at a Township Committee meeting earlier tonight, as Mayor Menashe Miller told attendees at the auditorium in Town Hall on Third Street that there would be courtesy busing until the end of the 2016 school year and that it will not cost the township more than the one million dollars the municipality already promised the school district this past summer, even though it was previously said that $2.5 million would be needed – just weeks after voters were asked to vote on a $6.2 million tax levy to keep the courtesy busing.

Sounds confusing? It is, but parents are breathing a sigh of relief, the lack of clarity notwithstanding.

Mullen reports that the New Jersey Department of Education will not be kicking in additional funds to ensure the continuance of the courtesy busing, a fact confirmed prior to tonight’s meeting by the state-appointed monitor, Michael Azzara.

So while no further info on where the money is coming from has been revealed, Township Committeeman Meir Lichtenstein – who has labored on this issue tirelessly over the past few weeks – told tonight’s meeting attendees that he was promised by the state that the courtesy busing would not be halted for the duration of this school year.

An official told Matzav.com that the good feelings about this revelation should be tempered a bit, as this arrangement ensures busing only through June. Going forward, however, some kind of arrangement must be found to make certain that courtesy busing will be available to Lakewood parents for the 2016-1017 school year and beyond.

Rabbi Avi Schnall, director of Agudath Israel of New Jersey, expressed his satisfaction with the latest development.

“We are very relieved that the original agreement with the state will be honored and busing will continue till the end of the year,” Rabbi Schnall told Matzav.com. “We must appreciate the hard work that both the Board of Ed members and the township committeemen have invested to ensure that all children of Lakewood will have a safe way to get to school. However, while we embrace this good news, we need to remain focused on the future and continue to work on a permanent solution.”

In a nice gesture the LPD has been issuing a printed warning letter on illegally parked cars. Instead of ticketing right away in cases of minor infractions, the cops give a courtesy warning first. Neighboring Howell cops who have a bad rap for issuing tickets also gave out warnings recently.

A slap in the face to tzibbur

$

The Vaad was no where to be found when there was a referendum for upgrading HVAC systems at the public schools. It cost the tax payers plenty, yet the vaad ignored the referendum leaving the tzibur out of what went on. That vote passed and taxes went shooting up. Why now with fire elections did the vaad decide to get involved?? if they truly care about taxes why were they silent during the HVAC referendum? Are there personal interests at stake here? why were they silent by other previous elections that effect the tzibbur? even the busing issue they were seemingly on the fence until they saw the winds blowing against them.  Do they not care about the non stop hikes in property taxes? If they cared for the tzibur they would not have members on the vaad who get BOE money for their agency thereby tying their hands from negotiating and advocating on behalf of the tzibbur. Do they think they will have the trust of the tzibbur come next election when they showed their true colors by ignoring the needs of the tzibbur? They might have gotten away till now, but that game is up.
