IT'S TIME FOR ACTION!

Over seven years ago, many of us stood up to the status quo in Lakewood and pushed out a politician that had been in charge of doing favors for individuals that hurt taxpayers and was eroding our quality of life. Since then we tried to take control of the Township Committee to do what is best for the Klal, but  with only one member willing to do what was right , it was an uphill battle. Our failure is visibly clear.

Over the last seven years an unbridled building boom has been responsible for unheard of TAX  INCREASES ,  a lack of basic SERVICES , unprecedented TRAFFIC, and an embarrassing IMAGE PROBLEM for our community at large.

We cannot cry over all the damage that was done to Lakewood. We can still save it , but we need to act now. We cannot just bury our head in the sand.

The promises of the incumbents and VAAD  endorsed candidates are just that , empty promises. They have proven time  and time again that they do not care about the needs of the taxpayers, the seniors, the yungeleit,  or our children.
We also cannot waste our votes on new candidates that seek to make a career out of serving on the Township Committee. We need people that are willing to do what is needed IMMEDIATELY to help stop any further erosion of our quality of life.

Please take a moment to go out and VOTE  JUNE 6th
For candidates that will do what needs to be done.

If you are a Registered Democrat or Independent

Please Vote For

DAVID GRUMAN and

MOSHE RAITZIK

If you are a Registered Republican and reject the VAAD endorsement

Please VOTE for

ABRAHAM SHARABY and

YOSEF TRAVIS

From these candidates we can choose two committemen that will form a majority that can immediately do what needs to be done to help Save Lakewood.

Thank you for your  time.

With hope,

Hershel Herskowitz

Reflections by David Gruman.
Ever since I signed up to run for office, people have been asking me: “why?” or “what do you need this for?” These are questions that are not easy to tackle with a few simple words. The easiest way for me to answer these questions is by taking a few steps back.
I grew up in a very different Lakewood than what we see today. I remember when the thinking in town was that young couples get married, learn in kolel and then move out of Lakewood-either for a shteller or for work. Back then, the community was small, and we all knew and cared for each other. As the town grew, the mindset changed and more and more families started settling in Lakewood.

What happened to Lakewood is amazing for frum families. While we can no longer brag that we know every family in Lakewood, we have so many options for yeshivos for our children, kosher restaurants, grocery and clothing stores, shuls, etc.  Although I miss the small-community feeling that Lakewood used to have, it is clear that the advantages are enough to overshadow the disadvantages.

As the community grew, there was a push to
rezone areas in town to make way for new families. It was acceptable for a developer to go in front of the planning board and get approvals to build 50 or so houses where there should only have been five or ten. Townhouses became the norm in R12 or R75 zones. Shuls and yeshivos were built without having to fulfil parking requirements.

Lakewood was soon to become the spot for families from all over the United States who were looking to settle in a frum, affordable environment. It was not always easy. I remember when we had a hard time getting shuls approved by the boards in Lakewood. The natives were not always sympathetic to the needs of our community. Our needs were new to them. Fortunately, there were people from within our kehilla that stepped up to the plate and helped deal with the transition.

I stood by the side and watched the town change. It was all fine and understandable. What bothered me was that as the town expanded, there was never much thought when it came to infrastructure. I remember the master plan of 1999, when townhouses became a permitted use in the HD7 zone along Route 9. The justification was that the state would dualize Route 9 and there would plenty of room for more housing. The housing came, but the infrastructure improvements never materialized. There were many such instances where justification was given for increased density but there was no performance on the infrastructure.

By the mid 2000’s, the town was starting to fill to capacity. As a bystander, I was waiting to see when it would stop. When would the announcement come from the township committee that would tell us that we can no longer rezone because the traffic was becoming unbearable? Needless to say, no such announcement was ever made. I am still waiting! At some point, it would make sense to say that there are too many cars on the road and we need to take a step back.

Over the past few years, I came to the realization that the people running this town have never changed their mentality. They are still stuck with the thought that we need more houses in Lakewood because we are a growing community. This is no longer the case-we are now a fully built-out town. People are moving to Jackson and Toms River at a rapid pace. It is time to slow the growth in Lakewood and allow the other towns to develop. In the interim, we could use the time to catch up with our infrastructure.

I would have been more than happy to continue being a bystander in this town while others guide and pace the growth properly. Unfortunately, I don’t see anything changing anytime soon. I feel that this is what happens when people are on the committee for too long. On the current administration, there is only one member that has served for less than two terms. The people who were on the committee for years have a hard time changing their mentality. They should allow new people to come aboard so that the views on the committee will match the sentiment on the street.

I have always believed that people who get involved are brave and well-intentioned. It is not easy to take a job that requires endless amounts of dedication to the public. I have the utmost respect for those who have served until now. Unfortunately, some have overstayed their welcome as they refuse to give in to the desires of the people.

It seems that little is being done to take care of the traffic issue. Over the past ten years, property taxes have tripled or quadrupled in many cases. The Board of Ed’s budget is spiraling out of control. Housing prices are at an all-time high. These are issues that are not being dealt with by the committee. The committee should be concerned with much more than the housing needs of our community-especially now that people have the option of moving to nearby towns. The entire mindset of the committee has to change.

I have always been a big believer in term limits. If Lakewood would have term limits, I would not even consider running. I would assume that new blood would come in and do things differently. It is easier to sit back and enjoy what this town has to offer, and let others bring change to how the town is run. For all of its flaws, Lakewood is a great place to live and raise a family.

Many people have asked me to run for office. It is a scary thing to take on new obligations while running a business and raising a family. I have thrown myself into this race knowing that when I win it will be a sacrifice to me and my family. My only hope is that I will be able to influence the current committee to wake up and smell the coffee. My goal will be to slow the growth in Lakewood until the traffic issue is dealt with properly. I would also use the opportunity to try to deal with the other issues that Lakewood is faced with, bearing in mind that helping people in general is the ultimate goal.

Controlling the Vote by Controlling The Press

When you want to control the voters, you control the media that feeds them information and silence all opposition. The Vaad strength is most of its base are older people with no accesses to the internet and they rely on mailings, local newspapers and robocals to land lines.
The Vaad wrote the following in its endorsement propaganda:

Individual community members can have legitimate disagreements with some decisions that are made at the community or governmental levels. The Vaad not only respects that, but encourages feedback and dialogue. They constantly re-evaluate and re-calibrate their askanus based on the evolving needs of the community, as expressed to them at the grassroots level.

Has the Vaad allowed feedback and dialogue?
Does calling others as "Unqualified" show respect?

Why than did were several media outlets of the frum community told not to run articles or give a platform to the candidates running for Lakewood township who were not endorsed by the vaad?

A Yated columnist wrote 2 scathing articles (HERE) about the traffic and over development in Lakewood he was summoned by the powers that be and told emphatically no more articles. The 3rd one of the series is still in draft mode.

Matzav.com posted ads for some candidates running for township but the posts were quickly back dated to appear on the second page. Why?

TLS and the Vaad make strange bedfellows, just a few years ago the word VAAD was considered a 4 letter word and was not mentioned. Now, not only is TLS a
mouthpiece for the vaad but no other candidates were allowed to run ads there or explain their position.

The BP in Lakewood also did not run any ads for non Vaad candidates

Give Credit to The Voice of Lakewood and Lakewood Shopper for allowing others to express their position dring te election process and leave it up to Lakewood taxpayers decide who to vote for.

The Lakewood Rosh Yeshiva Rav Malkiel Kotler signed a letter see below together with the Novominsker Rebbe, Rav Aaron Feldman, Rav Meir Hershkowitz and other American Gedolim pertaining to Giyus which was sent to Gedolei Eretz yisrael explaining their position about the dangers associated with the Draft law.  In addition another letter in the name of Lakewood Roshei Yeshiva calling on the bnei Yeshiva to attend the upcoming asifa at Barclays center was deemed as a photoshop. see below.

A letter being sent around in the name of the Lakewood Roshei Yeshivah, is false. The following statement was sent by the Gabai of Reb Malkiel Shlita.
“ברוב פחד ואימה על בזיון כבוד התורה ראשיה ולומדיה. I would like to be מודיע that the Lakewood Roshei Yeshiva never signed any letter about the Kinus that is being held in  the Barclay Center this coming Sunday. Any letter that is being distributed in their name is a total forgery and false.”

Unless you want to get annoying condescending divisive robocalls from the vaad telling you to shut your brain and continue the madness they created. The Vaad spokesman couldn't leave a simple election endorsement without a parting shot at Thousands of frum Lakewood residents who only want what is best for the town. In the Vaads own words "Let us stop those that are trying to divide us and weaken us".

Not Sure Who To Vote For? listen to this plea from a simple Lakewood resident

Polls are open from 6:00 AM until 8:00 PM.
"I sit in Lakewood traffic everyday, probably for about 2 hours in total - of what should be about 20 minutes max. I beg of everyone who can vote, to please go vote, - if not for yourselves then do it as a good deed for me. Please vote for change, we can't go on like this.
When you're unsure what to do you ask for advice, but there are no questions - the status quo just isn't tolerable. A neighbor of mine has switched to working from home because of the lost travel time. It just can't continue. Route 9 [going] north a few years ago was backed up till James, now it's backed up to Hearthstone. Imagine after the oak street corridor how it's going to look."

Why Is There No Traffic Light At Pine and MLK?

Why was the much needed light at Pine street and MLK in Lakewood never installed?

Why is Avreichim shul building at 10th and Madison still sitting empty only with a foundation?

Why are there no shuls allowed to be built in Westgate when hundreds of  parents and kids have no seats to daven?

Why are families ripped apart with Mesira to authorities alienating children from parents and no one says a word?

Why do well connected schools have busing and others still have to car pool?

Why is the culture in Lakewood of  כל דאלים גבר?

The answer is that some well connected Vaad members and township committeemen were inconvenienced by these things or have a financial gain. They put their personal interests ahead of the Kehilla at large or help their friends on the backs of others. So if your upset about sitting on Pine street for 10 years and nothing was done  its because it inconvenienced a few powerful people. Is this what a Vaad is meant for? Do you want this insanity to continue. Go out and vote send a message that enough is enough if you sit back the Charade will continue.

Ten years ago The Vaad Promised to "Restruct"and "Adapt" Nothing Was Done, Enough of the Bluff

In 2006 The during a contentious elections Bnei yeshiva and Lakewood residents were angry and upset at the Vaad's rule and control. The Vaad at the time put out a letter (see below) and promised to restruct and better adapt and respond to the concerns of Lakewood residents. The Vaad promised to form a "Ichud Rabbonim" to ensure the needs of the entire Lakewood Kehilla.

Fast Forward 11 years later its now 2017 the town has exploded and doubled its population we are at the same position no new members were added  NOT ONE RAV (outside the vaad)  IN LAKEWOOD HAS ANY SAY ON THE VAAD. Its controlled by the same few who continue to use and abuse the koach Hatzibbur.
Do they really think were such fools?
The Chutzpah to Ignore the needs of the kehilla yet call themselves representatives of the entire town?
And above all they pull out the Achdus card to quash any opposition. Have they no shame for sitting on their laurels all these years yet continue to fool the residents with puff pieces and PR through their controlled media outlets.
They had their chance and DID NOTHING. Its all talk no action. Its  time to let others represent the town.

Article from 2006
Lakewood, NJ - The Vaad, an influential council of Orthodox Jewish leaders, will be restructured to better respond to the concerns of the township’s fast-growing Orthodox community, the organization announced in a letter to Orthodox residents.

A council of rabbis is to be formed for the purpose of giving guidance to the 11-member Vaad, which issues political endorsements and takes positions on various civic matters.
“It is the intent . . . to place the Vaad under the guidance of the Ichud Rabbonim and through that to ensure that the needs of the entire Kehilla (community) are appropriately met,” the letter stated.
The announcement of the Vaad’s restructuring was included in a letter in which the Vaad also made its election endorsements for the municipal, House and U.S. Senate races. “We sincerely recognize that the Vaad . . . must adapt in order to better represent the needs of a growing and diverse (religious community),” the letter stated
