Sinas Chinom Rears its Ugly Head on Lakewood Tisha B'av Day 5778

As the Men in Lakewood were in shul Tisha B'Av morning saying Kinus sitting on the floor and crying over the churban, the frum news websites had something else on their agenda. No, it wasn't the all day non stop videos about the meaning of  tisha bav and the churban, it was actually an opportunity to spread hate lashon hora bashmutz and badmouth the Lakewood community. Ironically on the very that we call for an end of such practices.
The First piece came from VIN before chatzos. Nebach a 3 year old girl passed away R"L after drowning in swimming pool, the parents and the community are heartbroken and are making preparations for a levaya. Self righteous VIN couldn't just report it as is, the headline read "Drowning death of Jewish Jackson girl prompts call for greater pool safety". The parents did not even bury their child and VIN is already out blaming quoting from anonymous sources. If they were so concerned for Pool safety why did they not spread awareness for the last few weeks or all summer long? why now?Perhaps, because the agenda is  to paint Lakewood or frum yidden in a bad light and portray the community as not being safety conscious.

Than came the next one, also before chatzos Hayom at  approximately 11:00 am . The content was shared by the Jnetwork and  the frum news sites picked it up and posted the heart wrenching letter of a father's cry trying to get his daughter into a Lakewood school.  The topic of getting into Lakewood schools in a hot oneand nothing new, it's passionate and something that brings out emotions and opinions across the board. As expected, the comment sections were quick to fill up with hate lashon hora blame and besmirching the Lakewood community as a whole all on tisha B'Av.  They argued that there is no better to stronger day to post about it and send a message of sinas chinom than on Tisha b'Av itself.

Lets take a look at the circumstances, there are many kids who are still not accepted into Lakewood schools as of this very day for the coming year. Boys are not in high school, girls are not in high school and girls have no elementary school.  None of these concerned websites brought it up to the fore in recent weeks? Where was their concern for all those parents and children?

While the letter reflects the pain and Tzaar of parents trying to get their child in,  it also has some accusations and blame on others. To be fair It is only one side of the story there may or may not be another side but before everyone jumps in to comment, keep in mind that those people and schools who were approached may or may not have what to respond or simply can not publicly state their side of the story.

The articles screamed its been 2 years since Rechnitz gave is speech why can i get my kid into school. As many have pointed out since then, Lakewood is experiencing a lack of space problem and the root cause is the growth with an infastructure that can not keep up. (As proof, many boys schools have opened up since and the problem of getting a primary kids into school has been minimized drastically in Lakewood).

So what was so important to post this letter today, Oh because it had a great story line it highlighted a Lakewood v Lubavitch narrative. That was enough to fuel a fire and boy did it light up. The COL website was lit up with venomous comments about how bad Lakewood is how its full of Hatred and brought out old deep seeded feelings about misnagdim v chasidim etc.  the Lakewood scoop website suddenly awoke and pretend to care so much to report on the school issue (on tisha B'av day before chatzos )while ignoring all the development and lack of infrastructure and never bringing up the issues of kids out of school. The comments on YWN were predictable and not surprising. To their Credit Matzav initially posted the letter but had it removed.

Some honest comments wrote that this phenomenon is not a Lakewood issue but eve goes in monsey  crown heights and other communities as well. from Chabad On line:
REb Yosef is fighting OUR battle. This has nothing to do with living in Lakewood. THIS IS A PROBLEM IN CROWN HEIGHTS TOO!! Please believe me when I tell you this. I am a teacher for over ten years in the community and children are lately not being accepted to one of our biggest mosdos because of money. When I called the other smaller school on behalf of this child, the dean was a mentch and said let the parent come and substitute or work out a payment schedule etc . The choice was between moving to a normal apartment that was not lead and mice infested or giving this stubborn person ''full" tuition. EVERY other year they did what they can , this was the first time they needed help after having a new addition to the family and other crisis.
But when there is an opportunity to bash Lakewood for whatever reason even to look relevant and drive traffic to your website all of a sudden everyone pretends to care as was evident by the hypocrisy  displayed today on the 9th of Av 5778 On one side videos and speeches about sinas chinom while spewing hate bigotry, and maligning an entire community on the other side.

The Chabad Lubavitch school That was Supposed to open in Lakewood

There was an attempt earlier this year to open a Lubavitch girls school in Lakewood. For some reason it did not materialize. Here is the report on the original Facebook post.

After a first official meeting with the shluchim in Lakewood area here is the plan as of now for next year.
For now, we will start with one class (Girls around age 5) one Morah - similar in style to a playgroup - then over the year, we will hire administor for the second year. We will likely be starting with a basement classroom. IY"H by year two, we will look to start for boys as well. This is a work in progress. We don't have every answer yet, and meetings are still ongoing.
A Mossad under Merkos L'inyonei Chinuch and a joint project of the Shluchim the Lakewood area. No, I am not personally running a school. It will be open to all
families in the area regardless of background. A school with the "Chabad" open philosophy being very accepting, PROVIDED students are ready and willing to follow rules and regulations while in school. The school will embrace the line of Chabad Chassidus teaching with the ideas and guidelines established by the Rebbeim of Chabad. Parents will not be told how to live. This is not to condone a free for all environment, rather ensure the ability of every nishama the chance to learn Torah. Students will have guidelines to behavior. However students will not be judged based on actions of the parents. Students will not be kicked out of school for their parents "crimes". The goal is to gear the school in a Montessori style, allowing children to learn with a much more hands-on approach. This is something not just for the lower grades but all through the elementary grades. The curriculum will be built on a very hands-on approach really teaching kids to truly love Yiddishkeit. Meetings are still happening and funding is still in the process to get this going. We are looking for people who want to join in on the meetings and help get this established. DM me for more information.

An Attack on the Heart of the Community

$

A day after featuring an all out hate fest against the Lakewood community they were at it again this time "Kolell bashing" in a clever but subliminal way undermining and attacking the Kollel youngeleit of Lakewood.

It was posted innocently as a  question that was asked To Harav Avigdor Miller ztl. The comments were quick to the trigger hinting in every possible way against the lifestyle of Lakewood youngeleit who are moser nefesh for Torah.

A Town with thousands of ehrliche bnei Torah sacrificing themselves and giving up on materialism to serve Hashem, were publicly shamed, their lifestyle choice mocked and ridiculed. The Nashim Tzdkoniyos who who are equal partners supporting the husbands were also shamed and their lifestyle choice doubted. Shalom Bayis issues and other family problems were blamed on the kolell life as if no other segment of frum society has these issues.
These couples are the true heartbeat of Lakewood and they were again hung out to dry right after crying over the churban by the haters of Torah. While Most of the bnei hayeshiva don't go online we should still go out of our way to support them, uplift them and thank them.

By R' Yosef Shidler
After all the excitement and drama, we are working with a Morah local here in Lakewood that is ready to take on the task of opening a small primary class. She has experience in Discovery based learning and has an interest in seeing a school of that nature get off the ground. For now we are thinking very basic, in terms of getting a first year off the ground. We will be renting a basement location. The basic idea, is a warm very welcoming environment with a small class of under 10 girls.

NJ 101.5 Suspends Hosts Dennis & Judi for 'offensive comments'

Radio hosts Dennis Malloy and Judi Franco who have  defended the Lakewood community all the years from the media onslaught were suspended after referring to the NJ attorney General as "Turban Man" during Wednesday's show.
NJ AG Gurbir Grewal tweeted in response that he’s the 61st attorney general of New Jersey“I’m a Sikh American. I have 3 daughters. And yesterday, I told them to turn off the radio.”

New Jersey 101.5  released a statement: "We are aware of the offensive comments made by Dennis and Judi during today’s broadcast," the station said Wednesday night. "We have taken immediate action and have taken them off the air until further notice. We are investigating the matter and will have further comment shortly."

from NJ 101.5
Malloy and Franco had been discussing Grewal's recent order to suspend marijuana prosecutions, when Malloy said he couldn't remember Grewal's name — and told Franco "I'm just going to say the guy with the turban." The pair continued to call Grewal "Turban Man" throughout the segment.

The comments caught widespread attention on social media and in national news stories late Wednesday evening, around the time Gov. Phil Murphy released a statement saying he was "outraged" by the comments. An audio recording of the segment was cited frequently on social media as well.

Murphy, in a statement released just after 9 p.m., described the hosts' comments as "abhorrent and xenophobic." His statements were echoed in similar criticisms from the state ACLU, state Sen. Vin Gopal, Hoboken Mayor Mayor Ravi Bhalla and others.

Grewal is the state's first Sikh attorney general, and the American-born son of immigrant parents.

"A proud son of New Jersey and of immigrants, Gurbir has committed his life to giving back to the state and nation that have given his family so much. His story is the American story," Murphy said when he announced Grewal's nomination last year.

NJ 101.5— New Jersey 101.5 hosts Dennis Malloy and Judi Franco issued an apology today for comments made Wednesday regarding New Jersey Attorney General Gurbir Grewal on their popular, statewide radio show.

“We offer our sincerest apologies to Attorney General Gurbir Grewal as well as the Sikh and Asian communities for a series of insensitive comments we made on our show. For 21 years, the Dennis and Judi show has been unscripted and free form. We use humor and sarcasm to make a point and add color to the broadcast; in this instance, we were off the mark. It was a mistake we both deeply regret. We respect all cultures and beliefs and are deeply sorry for the pain caused to the Sikh community, our co-workers and our beloved listeners.”

New Jersey 101.5 announced that the station had suspended the pair for 10 days, and they will not return to the air until Aug. 6.

Addressing the apology and the suspension, New Jersey 101.5/WKXW-FM president Ron deCastro added, “We take these comments seriously and echo Dennis and Judi’s sincere apology to Attorney General Grewal and his family, as well as the Sikh and Asian communities. Dennis and Judi are known for their plainspoken brand of humor, but in this case, the language used was clearly demeaning and inappropriate. New Jersey is a state that is rich in diversity, and our radio station has served as the people’s voice for nearly 30 years. With Dennis and Judi’s help, we will use this incident as a learning moment to further a dialogue of inclusiveness for all residents of our great state.”
