New Kosher Pantry in Hospital of University Of Pennsylvania (HUP)

Philadelphia - It took Bikkur Cholim of Philadelphia 20 years of perseverance, lobbying and cajoling but now, finally, Jewish cholim from all over the world will be able to have a user-friendly experience as they access one of the most prestigious medical centers in the world, Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (HUP).

Sadly, until very recently, frum patients in HUP didn’t have access to kosher food or other frum amenities for caregivers. All this changed with a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the kosher pantry which took place on Thursday, December 5.

“Already 20 years ago, we realized how vitally important a kosher pantry would be for frum patients,” said Mrs. Malkie Schwartz, co-head of Bikkur Cholim of Philadelphia. “We started lobbying the leadership of the hospital back then, but, due to layers of bureaucratic red tape we were met with all kinds of obstacles.

“However, we finally celebrated the ribbon-cutting on an absolutely state-of-the-art, new bikur cholim room that offers so many amenities for the frum patient. HUP can now be an extremely appealing option for any frum patient from anywhere in the world who desires to access the amazing network of HUP’s world-renowned specialists.”

Mrs. Schwartz, together with co-head of Bikkur Cholim of Philadelphia, Mrs. Susie Wohlgelernter, and their wonderful group of volunteers have been serving cholim in CHOP, Lankenau and HUP for decades. At the ribbon-cutting for the new facility, however, they emphasized that the addition of the pantry in HUP will bring their services to a new level.

The new bikur cholim room contains an eating area, a constant supply of nutritious meals, snacks and even chalav Yisrael ice cream, something that is very hard to come by in Philadelphia.

The milestone of a kosher pantry was a joint effort that involved the hard work of many caring people. Mrs. Mindy Oppenheimer was instrumental in cutting through the red tape and lobbying the hospital.

Simultaneously, she helped spearhead a lobbying effort where frum patients sent letters to the HUP leadership, explaining how HUP is in many ways, a far preferable option to Manhattan Hospitals, but the lack of kosher facilities was preventing many frum patients from coming.

Many frum doctors in HUP also helped lobby the hospital, explaining how a kosher pantry would enhance their ability to serve all of their patients, Jewish and non-Jewish alike.

Pastor Jim Browning at the ribbon-cutting ceremony.
Also notable were the efforts of HUP President Regina Cunningham and Pastor Jim Browning, who was willing to give up his own office so that Jewish patients would have access to kosher food.

At the ribbon-cutting ceremony, Rebbetzin Choni Levene, Rebbetzin Emeritus of the Lower Merion Synagogue, Philadelphia’s largest Orthodox shul, powerfully expressed the tremendous gratitude of the entire Philadelphia and worldwide Jewish community for reaching this milestone.

She thanked everyone who was involved in bringing this dream to a reality, both those from Bikkur Cholim, and the hospital administration.

The beautiful pantry was designed by Mrs. Mindy Oppenheimer to allow for optimum comfort and convenience. A family member of a patient put it best when she said, “It was 20 years in coming, but it is so beautiful, it was worth the wait!”

Security funding doubles for private and religious schools in NJ Lakewood gets biggest share

Religious and private schools in New Jersey will get an additional $11.3 million in security funding from the state.  Private schools in Lakewood will receive an additional approximately $2.2 million in state funding to keep students  doubling the amount they currently receive  under a  bill Gov. Phil Murphy signed into law Tuesday. (Lakewood will get the largest share of the new funding because of its large private school student population. In the 2017-2018 school year, Lakewood's 32,000 private
school students made up a fifth of all the private school pupils in the state according to APP.com)

It was one of two measures aimed at enhancing safety in private spaces that he signed ; the other allows religious and cultural institutions to use state grants for an expanded number of security purposes.

Religious and parochial school advocates statewide have lobbied for more security funding for years. The measure gained momentum amid a rise in hate crimes in the country, including the killing of 11 worshipers at a Pittsburgh synagogue inOctober.

The school aid bill means religious and private schools will see an increase in security funding from $75 to $150 per student to spend on measures such as security guards and alarm systems. There are about 150,000 students at non-public schools in New Jersey.

Christian, Jewish and Islamic faith organizations had advocated for the bill, which passed unanimously in both houses of the Legislature. Murphy signed the bill Tuesday at the YBH of Passaic-Hillel, a Jewish elementary school.
But the bill also faced push-back from groups like the Education Law Center, a legal advocacy group, which argued that the state should be investing more in public schools instead of diverting money to private ones.  Murphy also signed legislation to expand the type of security measures that can be installed or constructed at houses of worship and community centers under the New Jersey Nonprofit Security Grant Pilot Program.

Through the program, nonprofits in New Jersey deemed at high risk of terrorism attacks can receive grants to use for safety measures including shatter-proof glass, lighting, fencing and card access readers.

Lakewood Math Teacher's Effort to secure more school funding continues

Administrative Law Judge Susan Scarola denied a state motion to dismiss a challenge to the school funding formula brought by a Lakewood High School math teacher Arthur Lang  APP reports

"Evidence and testimony presented by Lang "tends to show that (Lakewood Public School District) cannot provide a thorough and efficient education with the level of funding it receives under the (school funding formula) and that, as a result, the (formula) is unconstitutional as applied to the Lakewood public school district."

Lang said “I’m encouraged that we’ll be able to resolve the Lakewood funding conundrum,” he said. "It has been our position since we filed that the lack of funding has had detrimental effects upon student achievement and has reached constitutional dimensions."

His effort has been ongoing since 2014.

Last year, Lakewood schools accepted a $28 million loan from the state to balance their budget and stave of cuts to staffing and programs. The district's $165 million budget for 2018-2019 includes $100 million in tax revenue and $65 in state aid, which includes the loan.

About the Hashomrim Cards

A Release published in support of cards designed to subvert children against their parents was greatly misleading The Voice Of Lakewood magazine, claims.
Shomrim cards features grotesque caricatures of frum adults using smartphones, and of children complaining of the negative influence their parents have on them. The cards are aimed at convincing children to demand that their parents stop using smartphones.  A Advertisement published in a Lakewood publication a few weeks ago expressed support for the cards and encouraged people to donate. It included a letter signed by the roshei yeshiva. TVOL has learned that the rabbonim were never shown the cards and the letter was merely meant to support a project promoting awarness to the dangers of smartphone usage. When shown the cards, the Rabbonim  strongly disapproved of their content and message.

January 11, 2019 - A massive swarm of locusts plagued Mecca, Saudi Arabia, earlier this week, prompting authorities at Islam’s holiest site to launch a cleaning operation to remove them. Videos posted to social media showed the insects swarming around cleaners and worshipers in the city’s Grand Mosque, where millions of Muslim pilgrims congregate every year. “Specialized teams have been directed to work in the fight to eliminate these insects,” authorities in Mecca said, according to the Al-Araby Al-Jadeed news site. According to CNN, officials identified the locusts as migratory “black grasshoppers” and said that 22 teams consisting of 138 people were dispatched to deal with the infestation.
