Agudah Statement After NYS pushes back Eliminating Religious Exemption for Vaccinations

$
0
0
Agudath Israel of America has previously described that, with a measles vaccination rate in NY Orthodox Jewish schools of 96%, vaccination is our “clear societal norm” and that “it is imperative to build on the Orthodox Jewish community’s already high vaccination rate.” It has also decried an anti-vaccination rally held amidst the outbreak, and the inflammatory and senseless musings shared therein.

Agudath Israel has proactively organized multiple, free vaccination clinics in Borough Park, Flatbush, and Williamsburg; placed full page educational advertisements in community magazines and newspapers; and partnered with the NYS Department of Health and NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene to disseminate critical information to schools and parents describing best steps to prevent this disease. Our stance and actions on this issue have been clear.

That said, Agudath Israel views with
concern the recent passage of a bill to eliminate the ability to file a religious exemption for vaccination to allow attendance in a New York State K-12 school. When Agudath Israel expressed this concern to the legislature, it emphasized that the First Amendment, and the sacrosanct constitutional principle of governmental aversion toward impinging on the free exercise of religion, is a cornerstone of our country. It is a principle that our constituents routinely rely upon to function as Orthodox Jews in America. Erosion of that - irrespective of whether it affects our immediate religious practice - sets a dangerous precedent.

This is particularly true given that existing law already allowed religious exemptions to be revoked by the authorities in a time of outbreak; that this measure does nothing to address vaccination in preschool children, where the greatest vaccination lapses, and vast majority of cases, occurred; and neglects to add protective measures for overseas travel, the source of such non-native diseases. Moreover, the “anti-vax” movement, is a non-denominational, international phenomenon. Enhanced public vaccine and contagion education would have been a more comprehensive, long-term approach.

In short, with rates already high in most yeshivos, it is unclear if this reactive measure, if enacted last year, would have mitigated the current outbreak. With other less intrusive, and arguably more impactful measures available, it is our hope that lawmakers use their power in the future to negotiate the sometimes thorny terrain of balancing enhancing public health while preserving the integrity of free exercise.

כה תברכו את בני ישראל אמור להם: יברכך ה'וישמרך, יאר ה'פניו אליך ויחנך, ישא ה'פניו אליך וישם לך שלום ושמו את שמי על בני ישראל ואני אברכם

Parshas Naso is the longest parsha in the Torah with 176 pesukim,  The longest chapter in Tehillim (chapter 119) has 176 Pesukim. The longest parsha in the Torah, Naso, has 176 verses. biggest Masechta in the Talmud, Bava Basra, has 176 Blatt. What is the connection between all these?

First. the Gematria of the word נשא with the kollel  is 352 that is 176 x 2 to tell you that every Passuk has a deeper meaning either Perush Remez Derush or Sod.

another reason - Chapter 119 of  Tehillim has 176 verses because it follows a pattern whereby the 22 letters of the Hebrew alphabet are used to begin 8 pesukim each. That is, 22-times-8 equals 176.
22 is a number of completeness, because it is the full representation of the 22 letters of the Alef-Bet - i.e. everything from Alef to Tav.

As for the number 8: We know that 7 represents the "natural realm" - i.e. 7 days of the week, 7 notes in the musical scale, etc. But 8 represents completeness beyond nature - a completeness in the spiritual realm. That is why Bris Milah is held on the 8th day of a boy's life. This also explains why God first commanded Abraham to perform circumcision with the words, "Walk before Me and be complete" (Genesis 17:1).The product of two "complete" numbers, "22-times-8," is therefore the ultimate completeness. That's why 176 is used to demonstrate the supernal perfection of our holy Torah.

A Flash Flood Watch continues for the nj region from noon EDT today through late tonight

Strong thunderstorms are expected to develop and move through the region this afternoon and evening. The environment will be favorable for torrential rainfall with these storms.
Additionally, storms may begin to track over the same locations as a very slow-moving front allows
for the redevelopment of storms in similar locations over time. There is potential for one to three inches of rain in a very short period of time where the strongest storms occur.

See GreaterLakewood for a recap on the applications at last nights meeting at Lakewood Zoning
There were some heated exchanges between a member of the public and board officials.
A resident asked why applicants come to the zoning board after getting denied by the planning board since it did not conform with the Masterplan particularly on cross street certain zoning was not allowed until the roadway traffic is a level C 4 lanes. At one point a reference was made about givers
ant takers and the board attorney shot back if you think there were briberies you have an absolute obligation to go to the ocean county prosecutors office. The resident responded i know but as a jew im not allowed to do that and  will not do that i have an obligation and will not do that.

Posted on Yated Ne'eman Twitter page:

A letter sent in this morning to the Yated by Rav Shmuel Kamenetzky condemning "in the strongest of terms" the behavior of anti-vaxxers at last week's vote in Albany.

"The language used and the gestures performed by these individuals are disgraceful and shameful. No matter what their position is on the issue at hand, there is never a justification for such conduct in any forum, let alone in the state capitol in public view."

"We have a responsibility to be a light onto the nations behavior of this nature is not only repugnant and antithetical to that responsibility, but serves to create a chilul hashem b'rabim, a public desecration of the name of G-d."

Lakewood Schhol District Files Motion after 30 Million state aid Strippped from Budget

Back in March 2019 the state DOE allocated $30 million in funding to the Lakewood school district. Officials credited Lakewood High School math teacher and lawyer Arthur Lang, who has spent years in a legal battle arguing the funding formula doesn't work in Lakewood. The  funding was to help cover transportation and special education costs  and this funded the LSTA for another year and for provisional stabilization aid.

Yesterday the Legislature stripped this  $30 million funding from the budget as democrats and the Governor battle it out in Trenton. Nothing id final yet and Gov. Murphy huinted he may still veto the proposed budget which can force a govt shutdown.

Today the Lakewood School District has filed an emergency motion to stop the cuts according to reports. Board Attorney Michael Inzelbuch filed a initial request for emergent releif with judge Susan Scarola.
The Lakewood. School district does not have a approved budget ad it awaits word from the NJ DOE.

This was posted on Facebook by the OCPO following a press release that illicited hateful vile and anti-Semitic comments.

A MESSAGE FROM OCEAN COUNTY PROSECUTOR BRADLEY D. BILLHIMER: This seems to be an appropriate moment in our county to engage in a thoughtful discussion on the importance of mutual respect and tolerance. The Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office Facebook page is intended as a place for this Office to release information to the public and the press. While we value the opinions and constructive criticism of our followers, there is no room for hate and prejudice. Our differences in race, color, religion, gender, disability, sexual orientation,

Sweeny: Funding for Lakewood Schools still a Possibility

$

Senate president Stephen Sweeney,  suggested the additional funding for Lakewood schools was still a possibility, but that he wanted more information from the Department of Education about why Lakewood needed the money. App reports there was no conversation with the legislature when the $30 million was initialy thrown into the budget.

A spokeswoman for the governor reiterated the additional funding was necessary to provide stability in the district. "The governor remains committed to working with the Legislature to address the needs of our school districts, but simply withdrawing much needed support is not the answer to the challenges present in Lakewood," press secretary Alyana Alfaro said in a statement.
