Norfolk Update: A Letter to The Community

Letter by The Rabbi to the Norfolk, VA Jewish community
"You can avoid rumors. Misinformation about possible rescues, decisions, and storylines are not helpful and can cause great pain. Even true information and decisions need to be communicated in a responsible fashion. We are dealing with a family and community in distress."

To our distinguished community,

As friends, admirers, and students of Rabbi Bauman and his family, we have all experienced a very difficult week. My goal with these words is to clarify some facts and perhaps answer some questions.

As you know, Rabbi Bauman was caught in a riptide in the Sandbridge area of Virginia Beach in the early afternoon on Tuesday. The force of the water was so strong that nobody present was able to save him. The rescue crews were nearby and on the scene immediately.

It is true that Rabbi Bauman entered the water to rescue children in distress. Those children were rescued by a heroic bystander and are safe. The nature of the riptide was such that the bystander either did not see or could not reach Rabbi Bauman. We do not know the identity of the bystander.

The Coast Guard immediately set up a command center to coordinate local, state, and federal assets including military. Our area is home to the world's largest Naval Base and some of the best trained and equipped Search and rescue teams in the world.

I was personally on the scene with the command center all afternoon and they went above and beyond the call of duty. My wife, Rebbetzin Chamie, was with his wife, Tzivia who was obviously in distress. We were immediately in touch with countless Chesed organizations. Achiezer was on the scene quickly and worked with the Coast Guard command to involve the various Hatzalah, Chaveirim, Misaskim and other organizations with experience in water search and rescue. It was and remains a true Kiddush HaShem.

Chai Lifeline immediately sent a crisis expert to speak with the family, the children who were present, their parents, and the community at large. They have been working in concert with myself, the Jewish Family Services, and several highly qualified local professionals. At this point the search continues. As ma’aminim (believers) we remain hopeful for a miracle, a neis. The Coast Guard Command Center stretched their typical time for Search and Rescue Operations beyond what is typical and well into yesterday morning. They have, at this point, begun the process of phasing out several of their assets and many of those assets are being replaced by skilled and trained volunteers and volunteer organizations.

We have received encouragement and blessings for strength from the Gedolei Haposkim and some of the holiest people in our generation. It is our prayer that Rabbi Bauman will be found over the next few days at which point we will proceed as appropriate. Despite reports to the contrary, the family has not begun to sit Shiva. We are still searching for Rabbi Bauman and davening that he will be found. It goes without saying that our Torah and Jewish Law have contingencies for every eventuality.

 How can you help?

You can daven. The hundreds of thousands of tefillos (prayers) from all of Klal Yisrael have given our community, the family, and our children unnatural strength during this difficult time. You can volunteer. The contact person for volunteer efforts is Mr. Blau at 347-986-9482. Volunteering includes going out in boats, walking along the shoreline and supporting others as they search.

After careful consideration and discussion we have determined that we will not have Jewish volunteers searching over Shabbos. You can take care of yourselves, your children and each other. We are all hurting and we all need to be talking to someone to help us process this trauma. It can be a friend or a professional, but please recognize this need. This is not a fundraising letter, but many people have asked where they can send funds.

A fund has been set up and is currently managed and endorsed by myself and Rabbi Teichman, Shlita of Monsey. All monies in the fund will go directly to the needs of the family during this difficult time.

You can avoid rumors. Misinformation about possible rescues, decisions, and storylines are not helpful and can cause great pain. Even true information and decisions need to be communicated in a responsible fashion. We are dealing with a family and community in distress.

You can continue to be who you are. Klal Yisroel - the Jewish nation - is amazing and these past few days have brought it out. We are all one, and we all feel each others pain. We act on that pain and we never forget to turn our minds and hearts to Hakadosh Baruch Hu.

May these remarkable aspects of our community and Klal Yisroel be a zechus for Rabbi Bauman and for all of us until the day that HaShem wipes away all of our tears. On behalf of the family and the community, thank you.

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — Search and rescue crews found a body in the ocean near False Cape Sunday afternoon that officials believe is a teacher who went missing in the water earlier this week. Virginia Beach officials say they found the body around 2:15 p.m.
Joel Rubin, CEO of Rubin Communications Group tells 10 On Your Side that Rabbi Alexander Haber from B’Nai Israel Synagogue in Norfolk positively identified the body found as Rabbi Bauman.

The Medical Examiner’s Office will determine a positive identification.

The search to find the 35-year-old man began Tuesday afternoon. Coast Guard officials confirmed the ended their search efforts around 11:25 a.m. Wednesday.

A private search team from Maryland were the ones who spotted his body on the water today around 1:30.
With the help of the Virginia Beach Marine Rescue and police, his body was recovered shortly after.
Search teams who have been looking all week say this is sad end to an impactful story.

Hamodia: A Tribute to Rabbi Reuven Bauman Z"L

$

Hamodia.com (NEW YORK) - by Rafael Hoffman
The petirah of Rabbi Reuven Bauman, z”l, 35, was a tragedy that captured the attention and hearts of Klal Yisrael. Thousands followed the events in the news, many davened on his behalf, and dozens of people from organizations and communities around the country put aside their daily lives to take part in the search effort to locate his body.

The six days between his disappearance into waves of a Virginia beach and when he was finally brought to kever Yisrael brought Jews of disparate stripes together, bound by a heartbreaking cause.

Yet, behind the emotional news story of an elementary-school rebbi whose last earthly act was to save a child in his charge is the story of a phenomenal man, who in his short life touched many other lives. With gentle middos, an infectious ahavas Hatorah, and a genuine sense of respect and caring for his fellow Jew, he connected to young and old, sharing his knowledge and love of Torah in and out of the classroom.

Not content to hone his abilities in one of Klal Yisrael’s large and comfortable bastions of Torah life, Rabbi Bauman and his young family planted themselves in the small but rich communities of Savannah, Georgia, and then Norfolk, Virginia, in an effort to be marbitz Torah to the Jews of those southern cities.

In the three years since joining the Toras Chaim school in Norfolk, Rabbi Bauman had taught and inspired many students in his seventh- and eighth-grade classes. “Rabbi Bauman had an ability to connect with a talmid, and with a look had a way of telling each one that he cared,” Rabbi Mordechai Loiterman, Toras Chaim’s principal, told Hamodia. “He had a kindness and gentleness, and a calm sense of order, a positive attitude towards everything. He took being a rebbi very seriously and was very professional and prepared a great deal.  “Rabbi Bauman was a real talmid chacham and a tremendous baal middos who had an air of leadership that made you feel that you were speaking with someone far older than 35. He will be sorely missed by all of us.”

Reuven Tzvi Bauman grew up in Teaneck, New Jersey. Chinuch was something that came partially by way of inheritance, as his father, Rabbi Menachem (Mark) Bauman has served for many years as a rebbi in the Rosenbaum Yeshivah of North Jersey. He also previously served as the General Studies Principal of Yeshiva Rabbi Samson Raphael Hirsch (YRSRH) in Washington Heights. Both he and Reuven’s mother, Mrs. Esther Bauman, grew up in the “Breuer’s” kehillah, and the family has remained connected to it, albeit from across the Hudson River. In their younger years, Reuven and his siblings all attended YRSRH’s schools.

As a young man, Reuven spent several years at Yeshivas Bais Moshe in Scranton, Pennsylvania, where he sharpened his skills and yedios Hatorah before spending a period of time studying in Eretz Yisrael.

He married Tzivia, the daughter of Rabbi Yoel and Esther Stern. Shortly after their wedding, the couple moved to Elizabeth, New Jersey, where Rabbi Bauman joined the city’s community kollel. In 2010, they moved again, this time to Savannah, where Rabbi Bauman became a member of that city’s kollel. While in Savannah, Rabbi Bauman learned together with, and developed close bonds with, many of the small community’s members. One shiur he delivered presented a methodical study of the central commentators on Chumash on the weekly parshah. The care he put into preparation the shiur is still evident in the careful marks left in his Mikros Gedolos Chumash.

In 2016, the Baumans moved to Norfolk, where Rabbi Bauman took the reins of Toras Chaim’s oldest class. With his sincere caring and skillful teaching methods, he quickly became a most beloved mechanech at the small school. With a thorough understanding of sugyos hashas and a knack for clarity, he was successful in preparing several of his students for top yeshivos, seemingly worlds away from Norfolk......

Rabbi Bauman’s ability to bring the lessons of gedolei Yisrael down to a younger generation is not only left behind in his students, but in Yanky’s Amazing Discovery. The children’s book he authored tells the tale of a boy who is inspired to overcome his struggles in yeshivah by stories about Harav Yaakov Kamenetsky, zt”l.  read more at Hamodia

Guarding The Treasures

The Food for Thought column of the Yated Ne'eman Newspaper had a nice story of a security guard at the Bais Faiga elementary school Gratter Building in Lakewood. The guard Mr. Daniel Santos wrote a letter of appreciation to the benefactor of the building Mrs. Kupperman how he is greeted with kindness and appreciation from the students and cant count how many times he hears the word thank you. He notes the children are a reflection of the kuppermans whose legacy is carried on and demonstrated by the mannerism love and kindness from the faces of the children and faculty.
In response to the article in the Yated, Mr. Santos followed up with a thank you in a Facebook post.

"I wish to thank the Jewish newspaper in Lakewood NJ for the kind words they printed about me. The security position, that I feel was a blessing to obtain, is very rewarding in many ways. Even though I’m Catholic, a mutual respect between our religion, culture and language has formed and for that, I’m grateful. Guarding our Treasures was written by Mr. Hisiger and I thank him from the bottom of my heart. It’s truly my pleasure to watch over the children, thank you."

BOE Referendum: Why is it Lumped Together and Not voted on Individually.

$

0
The Lakewood Board of Ed passed a resolution to hold a referendum that will be voted on by the taxpayers to approve a annual 6 million dollar tax increase (on top of the allowable 2% cap) to cover costs for after school programs, courtesy busing and special ed funding. It was designed by lumping all 3 categories into a single ballot question. Possibly a tactic to get something passed that would never have passed on its own.

The tax payers should have the choice to decide on each one separately. These programs are not mandated by the state and everyone should have an opportunity to make  separate intelligent decisions.  Instead of lumping them together in an attempt to piggy back one off the other, it should be set up as separate questions on how to spend tax money. It should not cost more to have it designed that way.

Satmar Rebbe has called for a yom Tefilla this coming Sunday the fast of שבעה עשר בתמוז to beseech Rachmei shomayim as there is a threat of gezeiras shmad in New York State and a geziras giyus in Eretz Yisrael.

DOE seeks to impose and implement guidelines to the  curriculum in the yeshivos which will limit the hours of Torah study. Additionly it seeks to force the school to teach subjects that are not in line with the torah.

Earlier this week,  the New York state Education Commissioner MaryEllen Elia, who sought to enact strict oversight of private-school curricula, suddenly announced her resignation. At this point the threat to the yeshivos is still active.

Agudah Withdraws Siyum APP as it underminds Message Of Smartphone Usage

$

0
Leaders of Agudath Israel of America were recently contacted by a number of Roshei Yeshiva, Mechanchim and Rabbanim from across America who expressed concerns about the “Siyum App” introduced by the Agudah in conjunction with the upcoming 13th Global Siyum HaShas of Daf Yomi.

The original intent behind the Siyum App was להגדיל תורה ולהאדירה: to encourage and facilitate Torah learning among the broad hamon am by making Daf Yomi shiurim and other forms of limud haTorah easily accessible to the masses. The Siyum App was never intended to encourage those who do not have “smartphones” to start using them; it was meant for those who already do use smartphones, and who now would have an opportunity to use the App to start or increase their own kvias itim la’
Torah. In this respect, the Siyum App was designed with similar goals as were the several other special learning initiatives developed in advance of the upcoming Siyum HaShas – for example, Chavrei HaSiyum and Masmidei HaSiyum, which have already resulted in a major increase in limud haTorah among young and old alike, and which will be’H continue to do so in the months leading up to the Siyum and beyond.

Despite these good intentions, as news of Agudas Yisroel’s sponsorship of the Siyum App spread, we received communications from a number of respected Roshei Yeshiva, Mechanchim and Rabbanim that the Siyum App was undermining the message they were trying to convey to their talmidim and baalebatim discouraging smartphone usage whenever possible. They pointed out that Agudas Yisroel’s sponsorship of an app, even one designed to promote limud haTorah, conveys the misimpression that the Agudah and the Gedolei Torah who stand at its helm view smartphone usage as a “l’chatchila” for all segments of the Torah community. This, they argued, was inconsistent with – and harmful to – their efforts to discourage such usage within their kehilos and yeshivos.

We brought these concerns to the attention of the Moetzes Gedolei HaTorah of America. The chavrei ha’Moetzes agreed that the concerns were well taken. They acknowledged that many people may need to use smartphones for business or other necessary purposes, presumably with appropriate filters, and that there already exist several apps that promote limud haTorah. Nonetheless, they felt, an organization like Agudas Yisroel – whose hallmark has always been uncompromising fealty to da’as Torah and the highest Torah standards – must avoid taking any steps that could be misinterpreted as encouraging those who do not need smartphones to start using them.

Accordingly, at the direction of the Moetzes Gedolei HaTorah, Agudas Yisroel has withdrawn the Siyum App. We apologize for any inconvenience or misunderstanding.

Looking forward to joining with you this coming ד’ טבת, January 1st, dancing together at the Siyum Hashas לכבוד התורה ולומדיה ולקדש שם שמים!
