Updated:
The Rabbinical Council of Bergen County (RCBC) has issued an important p'sak halacha last night at a meeting attended by Bergen County Rabbanim including leadership from all synagogues and day schools.

Extreme restrictive measures in our community will be put in place beginning today including the cancellation of synagogue services, social events, s'mahot and all social gatherings. In one week, the situation will be re-assessed and a decision will be made regarding going forward for the following week. Details of these measures will be set forth in a letter from the RCBC to be delivered to the community shortly.

The decision to take these steps was made in consultation with health officials, physicians and government officials. The goal is to slow down the progression of transmission of the coronavirus within our community thereby allowing local hospitals (operating at 90% capacity before the onset of the virus) to meet the demands of the large amounts of people expected to impacted by this global pandemic.

We must now rally together as a community and follow the details of the p'sak halacha carefully so that we can help ensure the health and well being of the entire community.

Thank you for your cooperation during these very difficult and trying times.

Rabbi Haim Jachter and Joshua Murad, PresidentThe Rabbinical Council of Bergen County has decided to shut down all shuls in Bergen County, NJ. This comes after schools announced they will be closed as well. A formal announcement is expected. They will limit public gatherings and restaurants will only be open for take out.

Lakewood could owe 140 Million in loans, BOE Reluctantly accepts Budget, Taxes raised to the Max

Last night the board accepted the proposed budget and it  will be sent to the county and state for final approval after a public hearing in May, 2020. The school budget increased by $32 Million dollars from last year up 18% for a total of $204,266,868, from $172,492,195.
Lakewood property owners will pay an average of $150 more after the district taxed to the maximum allowed of 3%.

Included in the budget is a loan request for a whopping $61 million dollars. Lakewood already owes the state $80 million dollars in loans that have to be repaid and now are asking for an additional 61 million which means to put it bluntly Lakewood Taxpayers will owe the state $140 million dollars!!!!

The board members initially voted no on the budget hoping that the state monitor would override and approve but he said he will not do so this time and left it up to the board. District officials including the board attorney instructed the board members that they must pass some part of the budget in order to start the process. In the end the board voted for it with contingencies that they do not approve the loan and the state must kick in with aid to pay for mandated services. Officials acknowledged the craziness of kicking the can down the road if this would be a business they would have gone bankrupt. They mentioned the ongoing lawsuit of Aaron Lang that can hopefuly increase state aid to Lakewood

The 30 million expenses that went up from last year includes additional $7 million for Schi school
another Million for custodial workers after they unionized
payroll is going up 10% another 5 million because the district is giving raises of 3.5% and new hires.
professional services goes up 1 million which includes legal architectural services
Charter school is up to 5.7 Million
172,492,195 to

the loan 83 million loan town owes 80 million dollars to the state in projected loans of 139 million dollars  204 this is unsustainable  and could bankrupt based upon information $100 assessed at increase on the average home assessed at 332k

Statement from Torah Umesorah Roshei Yeshiva How Schools Should Respond to Coronavirus

STATEMENT FROM
TORAH UMESORAH'S VAAD ROSHEI YESHIVA
IN REGARD TO HOW YESHIVOS AND DAY SCHOOLS SHOULD RESPOND TO THE CORONAVIRUS PANDEMIC

We have been asked, in light of the pandemic spread of the terrible coronavirus, whether yeshivos and day schools should close down until the danger of infection has passed.

It is our opinion, at least as of now, and at least in cities or municipalities where public and private schools are not required to close, that yeshivos and day schools should remain open. The koach haTorah generated by tinokos shel bais rabban is inestimable, and is urgently needed in times like these.

The general consensus among health officials at this time appears to be that schools may remain open, as evidenced by the fact that most local health authorities have not at this point ordered the wholesale closing of schools, neither public schools nor private schools. We do not think that yeshivos and day schools need to hold themselves to a different standard than that determined appropriate for neighboring public or private schools.

Of course, yeshivos and day schools must do all in their power to minimize any risk of students or staff becoming infected by the coronavirus. Large gatherings should be avoided. Good hygienic habits must be
observed. Schools should have local doctors with whom to consult as any issue may arise. Most importantly, children or adults who do not feel well or who have compromised immune systems should stay home.

Finally, in light of the extraordinary medical dangers posed by the coronavirus challenge, and the tremendous negative economic impact the spread of the virus is having on individuals and industries, we strongly urge all yeshivos and day schools to add special tefillos for rachamei Shomayim. The Gemara in Maseches Shevuos, 15b, refers to Tehillim 91 as "Shir shel paga'im" or "Shir shel nega'im" - a special tefilla for protection from such plagues. This is a tefilla especially fitting for today.

May the zchus of maintaining hevel pihem shel tinokos bais rabban even in these difficult times be a source of protection for all of Klal Yisroel.

Erev Shabbos Kodesh, Parshas Ki Sisa/Parshas Parah
March 13, 2020/ 17 Adar 5780

Lichvod the Incredible Far Rockaway Community amu"sh:

Shalom U'vracha and A Gutten Erev Shabbos Kodesh to all. I sincerely hope that this e-mail finds everyone managing well, bi'ruchniyus u'vi'gashmiyus, under the challenging circumstances surrounding us at this time.

With a broken and heavy heart, I write to you all after an hour and half conference call with the Roshei Yeshivos shlit"a and Rabbonim shlit"a of the Far Rockaway community (and some beyond). Our final decision was in conjunction with the Posek HaDor, HaRav Dovid Feinstein shlit"a, in light of recent news that came to our attention this afternoon regarding some individuals within our
community. We spent a great deal of time weighing all of the different sides
and options available.

Li'ma'aseh: For this Shabbos, Parshas Ki Sisa/Parah, the local Yeshivos and Shuls will be closed as a necessary precaution to help ensure that the contagious Covid-19 virus not spread within our community, chalila vi'chas.

Please note that, at the current time, there is B"H no reason at all to panic. This is being done in consultation with our Gedolei Yisroel and reputable medical professionals/infectious disease specialists. Presently, we B"H do not have any confirmed cases of coronavirus in our community and, with Siyata Dishmaya merubah, we hope and continuously daven, with lev vi'nefesh, that it will remain that way.

The Roshei Yeshivos and Rabbonim will be meeting all together this coming Sunday morning to discuss the various options and next steps to be taken through the upcoming week. We will certainly keep the community posted and updated as new information and piskei halacha emerge.

Let us continue to pour our hearts out to HaKB"H, the true Shomer Yisroel, and daven sincerely, and with intensity, from our respective homes this Shabbos that we merit a yeshua gedolah bi'karov. May we be zocheh to join in only simchas and share besuros tovos henceforth IY"H.

With warmest wishes for a most meaningful Shabbos and only Kol Tuv always,
R' Eytan Feiner, together with the Roshei Yeshivos and Rabbonim of the Far Rockaway Community
