Hamodia-  Sunday, Hagaon Harav Chaim Kanievsky, shlita, received a series of halachic sheilos dealing with the spread of the coronavirus epidemic, notably in the chareidi community.

Harav Kanievsky wrote teshuvos in his handwriting to the questions that were raised by the various communities in Yerushalayim and were brought to him for guidance.

According to Harav Chaim Kanievsky, those who do not follow the Ministry of Health’s instructions is considered a rodef, and anyone who can should hand over to the police details of those who defy the instructions.

Here are the sheilos, with the response of Harav Kanievsky:

1. A person who, according to the doctor’s instructions, must go into isolation so as not to infect others if he is ill, yet he himself feels good and does not feel any sickness, can leave his home, or must he listen to the doctors despite feeling good?

“Listen to the doctors.”

2. A person who claims that he has emunah in Hashem and he will not to be ill, and therefore disparages medical guidelines (social distance and leaving home unnecessarily and so on) can he be defined as a “rodef” that might put other people at risk?

“He is considered a rodef.“

3. And if, chas veshalom, a person defies the instructions and causes someone to die, is this considered accidental or purpose?

“Close to meizid (on purpose).”

4. If one knows of someone who must be in isolation yet he comes out and endangers people, can he be scolded with loud and harsh words, though he may be embarrassed?

“It is allowed.”

5. Is it permissible to give over the name of a person who disrespects doctors’ instructions and endangers others, to the authorities? And is it permissible to provide information on shuls and yeshivos that do not obey the regulations, even if it results in a high financial fine or even imprisonment?

“It is allowed.”

6. Should a phone be left on over Shabbos in case the doctors need to reach someone and can he answer the phone due to fear of pikuach nefesh?

“It is allowed.”

7. What should the tzibbur take on themselves to stop this terrible epidemic that has already cost so many lives?

“To daven.”

Selling Chometz
You can sell your Chometz by using the shtar from Rabbi Shmuel Blech, printed in the BP Weekly and Lakewood Shopper. Cut the two pages, fill out the Hebrew and English shtar, and submit to Rabbi Blech by fax at 732-367-5600, by email sellmychometz@gmail.com by mail 1060 Forest Avenue, or dropped off there. An article in the Lakewood Shopper explains more. You can call 732 364 9309 with questions.
You can also sell chometz by appointing any Rov over the phone as your שליח to sell your Chometz.

Selling Chometz Gomur
We suggest that even if you don’t ordinarily sell גמור חמץ ,this year you should evaluate your situation, as it will be difficult to obtain Chometz right after Pesach without exposing yourself and others to sakana from crowds attempting to purchase Chometz. If in the past you did not sell גמור חמץ and you choose to do so this year you do not need to make נדרים התרת to do so.

טבילת כלים
The Kailim Mikva is closed. Tevilas Kailim for dishes or appliances requiring tevilla may be done at Lake Carasaljo in an inlet that is not in the main flow of water (one such spot is area near Lakewood Avenue and 5th Street, as the Rosh Yeshiva Reb Aharon Zt”l allowed Tevilas Kailim along that area.) Extreme care should be taken to find a separate spot with full social distancing and to not be near anyone else.
Utensils and appliances in the BMG “PesachBox” distribution do not require tevilla, as it will remain
legally under the ownership of an יהודי אינו until after Pesach. (Before using those utensils next year,
they will require tevilla.)

Cleaning for Pesach

Areas in the home that will not be used for eating or for Pesach food storage only need to be cleaned to assure that there is no significant piece of chometz. הדין מעיקר you are not required to look for crumbs. Areas that may come in contact with Pesach food (e.g. Kitchen, Dining Room, Pantry) should be cleaned well. Any area that cannot be reached or well-cleaned can be sprayed with a cleaning agent (such as ammonia, Windex, Lysol, Pine Sol, or something similar) that will render any remaining chometz נפסל .מאכילת כלב

Pantries, Cabinets, and Drawers that will be used for Pesach items should be cleaned and many are
מחמיר to line with paper or cloth.

Garbage Cans in your home should be cleaned.

Outdoor Garbage Bins
There will be no extra garbage service this year before Pesach. In Lakewood township, the township
owns the garbage bins. Remove containers containing bags with chometz from your property by placing the bins in along the street curb before Pesach.
In townships where the bins might be owned by the homeowner, please include the garbage bins in
your Mechiras Chometz.

Refrigerators and freezers should be cleaned well, and many are מחמיר to line with fridge liners, foil, or paper towels. Caution: Do not cover fans and air vents. It may restrict air flow.

Countertops, Backsplashes should be well cleaned and lined with thick plastic, heavy duty foil or two layers of regular foil.

Kashering the Kitchen

Sinks should be well cleaned; Ammonia or bleach should be poured down the drain and on the crevices between the sink bottom and drain (Caution: Never mix ammonia and bleach. It is dangerous). You can kasher your sink using one of the two following methods.

1) Use a plastic sink insert. No kashering is required. If no insert is available, you can line the walls of the sink with foil or contact paper. Sinks made of ceramic or enamel cannot be kashered and one of these methods must be done.
2) Some Poskim allow stainless steel sinks to be kashered with ראשון כלי עירוי .After cleaning and not
using the sink with hot water for 24 hours, pour boiling water directly from a kettle, that was not used
for 24 hours into the sink. Hit all parts of the sink with water directly from the kettle. If you want to use a pot and not a kettle to kasher your sink, make sure to not use the pot for hot foods for 24 hours. Then kasher the pot first before using it to kasher the sink. If a Pesach pot is used, it must be kashered again after being used to kasher the sink. Note: Water must be poured directly from kettle or pot that was heated on the flame.

Faucets

Aerators on the end of the faucet should be replaced or kashered.
While running the hot water through the faucet, pour boiling water from pot or urn on the faucet.
Alternatively, cover the faucet with foil.
Sink knobs should be cleaned and preferably covered. Small plastic bags held in place with rubber bands are a simple way to cover.

Ovens

Self-cleaning ovens can be kashered by running the oven through a self- cleaning cycle. The racks in the oven will be kashered as well. Some Poskim require that even after self-cleaning you must line the interior of the of the oven door with foil. Caution: Be careful not to line the walls of the oven itself or the element as your oven may catch fire. Caution: Do not cover the oven vents.

Regular Ovens should be cleaned with an oven cleaner and not be used for 24 hours. The oven should
be heated on its highest temperature for 2 hours. Food should not be placed directly on the racks, only
in pans or on foil. The Rosh Yeshiva Reb Aaron zt”l endorsed this method. Some Poskim are מחמיר that when using this method, all food cooked on Pesach itself should be covered and foil should be placed on the oven rack under the pan.

The oven knobs should be well cleaned. Some are מחמיר to cover the oven knobs.
Broiler drawers and trays cannot be easily kashered and should not be used.

Stovetops

Gas stovetop grates should be kashered by covering them on top completely with a thick heavy-duty
foil, or a pot and turned on the highest flame for 15 minutes. Caution: Cover and kasher only one
burner at a time to prevent a fire, chas v’shalom.

Electric stove grates should be kashered by turning the coils on to their highest setting for 5 minutes.
(No covering required).
All stoves: The rest of the stovetop should be thoroughly cleaned and lined with foil. Caution: Do not cover oven vents. It can be dangerous.

Knobs and Control surfaces should be thoroughly cleaned.

Tables

Tabletops should be well cleaned and lined with a tablecloth or heavy-duty foil or two layers of regular foil before covering with the Pesach tablecloth.

Highchairs

Clean and line the tray with plastic or foil.

Tablecloths, Dish Towels, Matzo covers, Aprons and Bibs

Wash with hot water and detergent. You don’t have to use new ones.

תענית בכורים

Bechorim should try to make their own siyum by learning and completing a short מסכתא such as תמיד .
You don’t need a minyan for a siyum. If learning your own מסכתא is difficult, join a siyum by phone and then eat something l’kvod the siyum you just heard.

שריפת חמץ

Due to the situation, the fire department will not conduct any public chometz burning sites. They insist that no private fires be made. Having thousands of fires made is definitely a real sakana and will cause a huge chillul Hashem. Since, unfortunately, this year we have no option of burning our chometz, after consulting with Harav Dovid Feinstein and Harav Shmuel Kamenetsky shlita, we ask everyone to be  מקיים the מצוה through crumbling and flushing away a k’zayis of chometz

Al eileh ani bochiyah. As the plague of COVID-19 sweeps across the world, there are many in our community who have fallen in its path. As we join the families in their sorrow, and our tefillos go out for those who need a refuah, we cannot give proper tribute to these individuals.

Hamodia would like to present a list, to the best of our ability, of the niftarim, and ask that everyone take some time to daven and undertake improvements l’illui nishmasam. May Hashem accept our tefillos and bring a swift end to this epidemic. We hope to be able to present proper tributes at that time.

Lakewood Botei Din- Halachic Guidelines playgroup Tuition

Lakewood Botei Din worked on a pshara regarding tuition for Playgroup morahs and babysitters it was approved by Harav Forcheimer shlita see full letter below (courtesy of LNN)

being that there is no clear halachic consensus parents can not be forced to make further  payments.  Morahs should not cash any head checks they have and return it as parents have a halachic right to cancel it  unless they are given specific permission from the parents to cash the checks.
with regards to the March tuition payment the morah should keep the full payment with regards to April the parents should pay 1/3 or 1/4 of the regular monthly tuition payment

for a babysitter that charges by the day the parents should pay 1/3 of the daily payment from the day the group closed
if a parent has the financial ability to  pay the full tuition to the morah it would be commendable especially this month with Pesach. They may deduct the portion from Maaser if they pay more than the suggested amount and the morah is in need of these funds.

Matzav
passing of Rabbi Zeev Rothschild zt”l, a towering baal chesed and yorei Shomayim.

Reb Zeev, the owner of NPGS in Lakewood, NJ, was one of Lakewood’s most notable and selfless baalei chesed, and was involved in numerous tzorchei tzibbur.

Reb Zeev quietly and without fanfare helped numerous struggling families, almanos and yesomim. He was called upon regularly to mediate in difficult situations, and with his tremendous chochmah, he’d navigate seemingly impossible circumstances, while everyone knew that Reb Zeev had no agenda other than to help those involved.

Reb Zeev resided on Forest Avenue in the heart of Lakewood, right near Seventh Street, around the corner of Bais Medrash Govoah. Indeed, he was the very “heart” of Lakewood, as his own generous heart had room for every yochid and every nitzrach, every need and every person who could be helped.

Reb Zeev was always away from the limelight, and that’s how he liked it. He never sought recognition or accolades, despite that wide reach of his activities.

The word “no” did not exist in his vernacular. If there was a need, if someone could be helped, if he could be involved in an undertaking l’sheim Shomayim, he was there.

When Reb Zeev identified the high cost of food for the average frum family, he launched a then-unheard idea, a Non-Profit-Grocery-Store, to become known as the Co-Op, and later as NPGS, to provide groceries at reasonable prices. When he felt he could do more, he launched his own shechitah, and his own line of products, again in order to provide food at the lowest prices to bnei Torah.

His shechitah and grocery line were also launched in an effort to provide the absolutely highest level of kashrus anywhere.

Reb Zeev actually took on a special mashgiach just to supervise the products sold in his stores, so that any shopper could be confident that any product taken off a shelf at any of the Co-Op stores was on a mehadrin level.

Reb Zeev was unbending in his hashkafah and standards, and wouldn’t allow any item into his stores if he felt it could compromise the purity and reinkeit of Torah mishpachos.

The Co-Op is officially a “business,” but one might say that it is more of a chesed organization. The amount of chesed done from the NPGS offices is unfathomable. From hiring workers who needed parnassah to providing food to an untold number of families to helping thousands who benefit from the Co-Op’s prices and integrity, Reb Zeev’s NPGS is a virtual chesed empire.

But that was only one facet of Reb Zeev, who was an outstanding talmid chochom, who was well-versed in halacha and adhered, personally, to the highest levels of dikduk b’halacha and shemiras hamitzvos. He was a shining role model to others in his sterling middos, his humility, his ehrlichkeit, and everything he stood for.

As one askan said, “Reb Zeev was a chad bedara, one in a generation.”

Reb Zeev had become very ill and a name was added, as Yidden davened for Shlomo Zev Asher ben Devorah. He passed away this morning.

Reb Zeev’s petirah has plunged tens of thousands of admiring friends and families into mourning. Who will be there now to help the downtrodden and forlorn? Who will be there now to worry about the yochid? Who will be mafkir themselves to the klal, doing anything and everything for whoever needs it?

Mi yitein lonu temuraso?

Reb Zeev is survived by his dedicated rebbetzin, Mrs. Brachi Rothschild, and their wonderful family.

Levayah details will be published once they are finalized.

Yehi zichro boruch.

-Report:  Engagement party PD gets it all wrong: The summons called it a ‘wedding’ and it charged a 99-year-old man married to a 21-year-old woman. In reality, the man was 27 years old but the officer wrote the date as his birthday, so the following day they released a report saying he was 99! Everyone were in their cars. The media and authorities blew this one again (VeltNews)

-Lakewood community leaders applauded the increased scrutiny announced Wednesday to crack down on social distancing violations.

News 12 NJ “Any summons that is being issued at one of these events is approved by the [Ocean County] Prosecutor’s Office. When officers go on site, they check with the prosecutor and see what they can issue,” said Coles. The mayor says that initially only the homeowners hosting the gatherings were fined. “Then we decided anyone who is there is going to be fined. Lately, if there are children there, they’re going to face child endangerment and that’s no laughing matter. It’s not just a matter of sending a check into the court to pay the fine,” Coles said.
