It is with great sadness that Matzav.com reports the passing of Rav Yitzchok Dershowitz of Lakewood, NJ. He was 69 years old. Rav Dershowitz sustained serious injuries upon falling on Simchas Torah and fell into coma. Since then, doctors battled on his behalf. He passed away on Erev Shabbos. Click Here! Rav Yitzchok was a son of Rav Aharon Menashe Dershowitz zt”l, who, prior to settling in Lakewood, served as the chief rabbi of Newport News, VA, as well as various cities across Wisconsin. A talmid of Rav Aharon Kotler zt”l, Rav Dershowitz spent his life between the hallowed walls of Beth Medrash Govoha, where has learned for many decades.
It was Rav Dershowitz who undertook the daunting task some years ago of authoring an authoritative biography about his rosh yeshiva, Rav Aharon. The product, a comprehensive volume called The Legacy of Maran Rav Aharon Kotler, is distributed by Feldheim. Rav Yitzchok and his wife, Chaya, resided on Sixth Street in Lakewood, near the yeshiva to which Rav Yitzchok was so closely connected. His sudden medical crisis threw his many admirers and chaveirim into turmoil, as they davened for his recovery, but the Ribono Shel Olam took this special person to the Kisei Hakavod. Hashgacha orchestrated for Rav Yitzchok to be taken to the Olam Ha’emes on the very yahrzteit of his rebbi, Rav Aharon, 2 Kislev. The levaya will be held Sunday morning, at 9 a.m., at the Bendheim Bais Medrash of Beth Medrash Govoha, located at 617 Sixth Street in Lakewood, NJ. Yehi zichro boruch

4 months into the school year some of the newly purchased board of Education buses are now being used to transport children for the LSTA consortium. Over the weekend, kids in Lakewood private schools came home with bus passes for the new routes. About twenty routes were added taking on more children who did not receive busing since the beginning of the year. these routes however are only for the morning commute, parents still are carpooling to pick up from school. There are still kids without busing, Officials are hopeful to bring more vendors to the township and eventually provide busing for all private school kids.

LAKEWOOD - The Torah world was plunged into mourning Monday morning with the petirah of Rebbetzin Miriam Salomon, a”h, the wife of, ybl”c, Harav Mattisyahu Salomon, shlita, Mashgiach of Bais Medrash Govoha (BMG) of Lakewood. She was remembered as the ultimate eishes chaver whose life was defined by her absolute dedication to the Mashgiach as well as to the needs of his many talmidim and the myriads who seek his counsel. With her natural sense of selflessness and pure yiras Shamayim, she cared for and inspired all those who were privileged to come in contact with her. She was 75 years old.

“What a zechus she had … I depended entirely on my wife; she was a source of so much chizuk,” said Rav Salomon in his hesped, a mussar shmuess in itself in which the Mashgiach gave short explanations on each passuk in Eishes Chayil relating them one-by-one to his Rebbetzin. “Her whole life was filled with doing good for others, for big and for small, for so many in this town.”

The Rebbetzin was hospitalized several months ago. On Motzoei Shabbos, her condition became critical, and she was niftar in the hospital Monday morning, surrounded by family members.

“She was a remarkable woman, who with tremendous chachmah was able to juggle her responsibilities to her own family and to the klal in an unbelievable manner,” Harav Ahron Dovid Dunner, a brother-in-law of the Rebbetzin, told Hamodia. “She was available day and night and did everything imaginable to relieve her husband of any burdens that would take him away from his avodas hakodesh.”

Rebbetzin Salomon was born in Manchester in 1941. Her parents, Reb Avrohom Tzvi, z”l, and Mrs. Sarah Falk, a”h, were known for their tremendous yashrus and yiras Shamayim. The couple had fled their native Germany just a few years before.

In an age when it was hardly popular, the Falks went to great lengths to see that their children should strive to build homes built on Torah and made every effort for their four daughters to marry true bnei Torah. At the time, the decision made him an object of ridicule, but Reb Avrohom Tzvi’s stubbornness bore for himself and for Klal Yisrael as his family includes Harav Pesach Eliyahu Falk, Dayan Ahron Dovid Dunner and Harav Salomon, among several other prominent marbitzei Torah.
Mashgiach at the Levaya

In 1960, the Rebbetzin and, ybl”c, Rav Salomon wed and settled in Gateshead where her husband had already been in yeshivah for several years. With their union, she began what was a lifelong career of absolute dedication to her husband’s well-being, growth and, eventually, his own harbotzas haTorah.

As the Salomon family began to grow, it quickly gained renown as a model of a “Yiddishe shtub,” with the Rebbetzin firmly at its helm. It was built on the strong mesorah she had inherited from her own parents and scrupulously guarded against any foreign influences.

As the Mashgiach began to assume greater responsibilities in the Gateshead Yeshivah, the Rebbetzin’s partnership with her husband’s avodas hakodesh took on a new dimension. In his role as Mashgiach, a constant flow of bachurim found their way in to the Salomons’ house. Whether the visit was for a short conversation with Rav Salomon or to stay for a Shabbos or Yom Tov, the Rebbetzin tried her utmost not only to make talmidim feel at home, but as if they were part of the family.

For many decades, the Salomons’ home in Gateshead was known for its warmth and hospitality to the entire community. With a sense of absolute duty to the klal, the Rebbetzin went to great lengths to see that all who passed through her doorway left feeling honored and cared for. The sight of local women pouring their hearts out about serious problems, coming for a few kind words, or even to lighten their day with the Rebbetzin’s famous sense of humor was a regular occurrence.

When the Salomons moved to the United States in order for Rav Salomon to assume the position of Mashgiach of Bais Medrash Govoha of Lakewood in 1997, the Rebbetzin’s role multiplied together with that of her husband’s. As the Mashgiach’s time, energy and wisdom became a quantity in constant demand throughout the American Torah world, she too redoubled her efforts to simultaneously facilitate his expanded role while protecting his own well-being. Without possessing any official position and preferring her own kitchen table to any public place, she discreetly kept the schedule of one of Klal Yisrael’s most demanded Gedolim and dispensed a world of chessed and wisdom.

Late Monday afternoon, a crowd of thousands gathered at Bais Medrash Govoha in Lakewood to bid a tearful farewell to the Rebbetzin who for decades had played a quiet, yet pinnacle role not only in Gateshead and Lakewood, but wherever bnei Torah lived.

Harav Yaakov Yehudah Salomon, a son of the Rebbetzin, began his emotional hesped by saying “it is not coincidence that we are here on a Monday night,” the time when the Mashgiach usually delivers his weekly mussar shmuess in the yeshivah.

“As he [Rav Salomon] prepared in the afternoon, she would sit in the kitchen and say Tehillim … and the Tatte would not leave the house before asking the Mama for a brachah that the shmuess should go with hatzlachah,” he said.

Other maspidim included the Roshei Yeshivah of Bais Medrash Govoha: Harav Malkiel Kotler, shlita, Harav Yeruchim Olshin, shlita, Harav Dovid Schustal, shlita, and Harav Yisroel Newman, shlita, as well as Harav Yitzchok Sorotzkin, shlita, Rosh Yeshivah, Mesivta of Lakewood and a mechutan of the Salomons, and Harav Moshe Salomon, another son.

From Lakewood, the levayah departed to JFK airport where additional hespeidim were scheduled to be delivered before the aron was flown to Eretz Yisrael for kevurah on Har Hamenuchos.

The Rebbetzin is survived by, ybl”c, her husband, Harav Mattisyahu Salomon; several siblings; sons; Harav Yaakov Yehudah, Harav Moshe and Harav Meir; daughters, Rebbetzin Naomi Jacobs, Rebbetzin Chana Gitelson, Rebbetzin Nechama Weinberg, Rebbetzin Rivka Perkowski, Rebbetzin Esther Knopfler, Rebbetzin Rochel Sorotskin, and Rebbetzin Ettel Halpern; as well as by many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Yehi zichrah baruch.

Lakewood Tax dollars: LIC LDC UEZ

Lakewood Township proposes to merge the LIC (Lakewood industrial commission) with the LDC (Lakewood Development corporation) Those free networking seminars and many other commissions in the Township of Lakewood operate with tax monies from local tax payers. Reporter from NJ news and views give details of spending, how funds are allocated and who gets them.
NJ News & Views
"At the September 6, 2016 LDC meeting, members approved a resolution for $$65,000 in sub-recipient grant funding for the Lakewood Community Services Corporation (LCSC) Business to Business Networking 3 program".

During his public comments at the September 15, 2016 committee workshop meeting, Coles said that UEZ funds were starting to dwindle. As a result, he wanted to once again merge the LDC with the LIC. Coles said that the township's UEZ program was separated from LIC oversight years ago.

"A local developer said only the LIC has the right to negotiate the sale of (public) land, so they became separate," he said. The LDC is a non-profit organization that was incorporated on October 2, 1997. While the LIC has the authority to sell and lease public land for redevelopment, the LDC has the authority to purchase privately-owned property for redevelopment.

Coles also said he supported the merger in order to reduce the number of professionals each agency hired through duplication of services. He said most of the LDC services were now provided by the Lakewood Community Services Corporation (LCSC). The LDC is not the only Lakewood agency to fund the service organization's work.

Six years ago, the LCSC turned to the LIC for award of a $40,000 grant after the state UEZA reportedly reduced available UEZ funding for the non-profit organization's English as a Second Language (ESL) program in February 2010. The state took the action after LDC members held an illegal vote in executive session at their January 2010 meeting on a resolution for action that LDC Chairman Moshe Z. Weisberg opposed.

Weisberg is not just a long-time member of the LDC, he also is a government lobbyist and member of a political interest group that makes endorsements for elected office.

So is current LDC Chairman Avroham (Abraham) Muller.

No matter how politically influential, under the state's Open Public Meetings Act (OPMA), government officials must approve the expenditure of public funds in public session, not executive session.

At the April 30, 2010 LIC meeting, member William Doyle asked why the LIC was now involved in funding an LCSC program.

"I know we have to," he said, "But that doesn't make it right."

Lakewood officials are still struggling to balance influential political interests with the public interest.

In his September 15 discussion of merging the LDC with the LIC, Coles said he wanted to "move some people around," but did not elaborate which people or how much money such a reorganization of personnel would save. More importantly, he did not discuss how the cost savings would be applied elsewhere.

Committeemen present during Coles' discussion of the proposed merger did not comment on it.

In a September 21 e-mail request for comment, a reporter for NJ News & Views asked Coles why he opposed funding the LDC Co-op Advertising Grant program, but voted to approve two other grant programs during the September 6 LDC meeting.

At the September 6, 2016 LDC meeting, members approved a resolution for $$65,000 in sub-recipient grant funding for the Lakewood Community Services Corporation (LCSC) Business to Business Networking 3 program.

Detailed project costs included a $25,000 payment to the LCSC Coordinator, $5,000 in supplies; a $2,000 guest speaker's fee; $10,000 for staff associates and clerical; and $3,500 in payroll taxes.

The grant also included $20,000 for advertising.

LDC members approved a second resolution for $96,650 in sub-recipient grant funding to the LCSC for the Business Assistance Initiative 6.

Under the 2016-2017 Business Assistance Initiative, the LDC is subsidizing the operation of a non-profit organization founded by LDC Secretary/Treasurer Moshe Z. Weisberg in 2001.

The $96,650 grant underwrites $81,500 in personnel costs, out of an annual total of $111,529.80 to employ a business director, office administrator and secretary; $800 for all Internet and phone costs; $750 for all supplies of paper, toner, etc.; $11,400 towards a total annual rent of $20,100 in a UEZ office space; and $15,150 in UEZ funding for a total of unspecified costs totaling $23,850.

The second grant also included $2,200 in marketing costs for ads, flyers and other associated services.

That's a total of $22,200 in advertising and marketing grant funding that the LCSC will receive over the next year, and that Lakewood business owners seeking UEZ Co-op Advertising Grant funds will not. read more HERE
