Rabbi Nisson Wolpin, Zt”l, Pioneer of Torah Journalism

BROOKLYN - Rabbi Nisson Wolpin, z”l, a pioneer of Torah journalism who worked closely with gedolei Yisrael for decades in his position at the helm of the Jewish Observer magazine, was niftar late Monday night, 29 Nisan. He was 85 years old.

When Rabbi Wolpin was initially approached by Rabbi Moshe Sherer, z”l, and Dr. Ernst L. Bodenheimer, z”l, to become editor of the
Jewish Observer, he was reluctant to leave what had been a very successful career in chinuch. Yet, when he put the matter before Harav Yaakov Kamenetsky zt”l, the Gadol encouraged him to accept the offer, telling him, “You will still be working in chinuch,” albeit for a different age group. It was with that earnest sense of responsibility that Rabbi Wolpin approached the task of stewarding the magazine, ensuring that its content was professionally presented, engaging, and an accurate reflection of hashkafos haTorah.

“He was an ish emes, who looked for the truth and would not budge from it,” his brother Rabbi Dovid Wolpin told Hamodia. “He had a very sharp mind and was not a naïve person in the least, but he was completely mevatel himself to daas Torah; he accepted what the gedolei Yisrael had to say and accepted criticism graciously because he really meant all that he did l’shem Shamayim.”

Nisson Wolpin was born in 1932 in Seattle, Washington. His father, Reb Efriam Ben Tzion, z”l, a hailed from the city of Pinsk, Belarus, and had studied in Yeshivas Yitzchok Elchonon, then on the Lower East Side, before accepting a position as a melamed in Seattle. His mother, Mrs. Kaila Wolpin, a”h, was born in Ukraine and immigrated to the U.S. with her father who led a shul in Brownsville for many years.

In those days, Seattle did not yet have a Jewish day school, and so the Wolpin brothers attended public school by day and studied in a Talmud Torah in the late afternoon. Despite the limited hours of operation, the Talmud Torah offered a serious atmosphere for learning and catered to many frum families. Among young Nisson’s rebbeim was Reb Baruch Shapiro, z”l, a talmid of the Rogatchover Gaon, zt”l, and the Ohr Somayach, zt”l.

At 15, Rabbi Wolpin was enrolled in Mesivta Torah Vodaath where he spent many years engaged in tremendous growth in Torah and yiras Shamayim. The menahel Harav Shraga Feivel Mendlowitz, zt”l, emphasized hashkafah and duty to Klal Yisrael, and the young talmid from Seattle was deeply influenced. The message and ruach of Mesivta Torah Vodaath played a significant role in determining Rabbi Wolpin’s life’s mission. He also formed long-lasting bonds with both Harav Yaakov Kamenetsky, zt”l, and Harav Gedalia Schorr, zt”l.

In 1952, Rabbi Wolpin joined a small group of elite talmidim of the yeshivah who traveled to Los Angeles to strengthen a mosad that was founded by Harav Simchah Wasserman, zt”l. Upon his return, he joined Bais Medrash Elyon in Monsey where he studied together with many future gedolei Yisrael and prominent marbitzei Torah.

He married Devorah Cohen, the daughter of Reb Mayer, z”l, and Mrs. Yospa Cohen, a”h, who then lived in Ottawa, Canada. The couple spent a short time in Williamsburg where Rabbi Wolpin worked as a dorm counselor in Torah Vodaath and later moved to Scranton, Pennsylvania, where he taught in the local day school.

Knowing Rabbi Wolpin’s merits from his time together with him in Bais Medrash Elyon, and noting his success as a mechanach, in 1958 he was asked by Harav Yehoshua Geldzheler, zt”l, to join Yeshivas Ohr Yisrael, the cheder the latter founded in Forest Hills, Queens.

In 1970, Rabbi Wolpin assumed the position of editor of the Jewish Observer under the auspices of the Agudath Israel of America. “The JO quickly became the flagship publication of the Torah world, and thousands of Jewish families awaited its arrival each month to read the guidance of Gedolei Klal Yisrael, and the thoughts of its many accomplished writers,” said the Agudah in a statement mourning Rabbi Wolpin’s petirah. “Under Rabbi Wolpin’s discerning and demanding eye, the periodical became the archetype of Torah-hashkafah married to excellent writing. That remained the magazine’s standard over the nearly 400 issues it published.”

He gave many long and late hours to the publication working with his staff of writers, editorial board, and gedolei Yisrael with whom he was in constant contact for guidance on the magazine’s content. Writers who worked with Rabbi Wolpin recalled that his editorial comments on submissions were insightful and he found ways to skillfully and subtly emphasize the message of the article.

His prominent position and access to the leaders of Klal Yisrael did not change Rabbi Wolpin’s low-key personality.

“Being an editor is not an easy job, but he was consistently held in high regard and loved by the many people he worked with,” said Rabbi Dovid Wolpin. “He was willing to do what he needed to to fulfill the mission of the magazine. But, as public of a job as that was, he did whatever he could to stay out of the lime light. It’s a very unusual combination.”

The Wolpin home had open doors to many in need of a warm meal, a kind word, or a bed to sleep in. Many individuals and families were touched deeply by the quiet chassadim of Rabbi and Mrs. Wolpin.

Since leaving his position at the Jewish Observer in 2008, Rabbi Wolpin began spending the vast majority of his time in the beis medrash, learning with various chavrusos. In 2010, the Wolpins moved to Eretz Yisrael where several of their children live.

The levayah was held on Tuesday in Yerushalayim and kevurah took place on Har Hazeisim.

Rabbi Wolpin is survived by, ybl”ch, his wife Mrs. Devorah Wolpin; sons, Harav Rafael Tzvi, Harav Moshe Yaakov, and Harav Yitzchok Dovid; daughters, Mrs. Henny Storch, Mrs. Miriam Baumel, Mrs. Rochel Lobenstein, and Mrs. Sarah Bromspeigel; as well as by many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Take Back Lakewood Meet the Candidates
On Tuesday June 6th 2017, NJ residents will head to the polls for the primaries. For most in NJ it will mean a chance to have a head start in selecting Governor Christie’s replacement. For those in Lakewood—there is an added element.
If you are happy with the way Lakewood has been run for the last 15 years, please vote for Ray Coles and Mike Delia and stop reading this article. If you feel that Lakewood has been headed in the wrong direction for far too long and would like to see some change—you are in luck.
For far too many years, there were only 2 candidates leaving us with little to no choice. Yes the Vaad backed candidates won—but no one else was really trying. There was a defeatist mentality that there’s no use trying since the vote results seemed predetermined. I’m happy to announce that now, in 2017 is the year that it will all change. There will be choices. Many communities including the thousands of seniors and the orthodox community will finally have a real say in changing the status quo.

There are two open seats on the Township Committee. Registered Democrats and registered Unaffiliated voters may vote in the Democratic Primary. Registered Republicans and registered Unaffiliated voters may vote in the Republican Primary.

Democratic Primary
The Democratic Primary will have 3 candidates on the ballot. 1) Dovid Gruman 2) Moshe Raitzik 3) Ray Coles. The 2 of them with the most votes in June will go on to compete in the fall election and the one who loses will be eliminated completely from any 2017 opportunity.

Dovid Gruman
Dovid is a 3rd generation Lakewood resident. His grandfather was a talmid of Rav Aharon Kotler Zatzal. His father was born in Lakewood in Paul Kimball hospital and Dovid has been living in Lakewood his entire life. He studied in BMG for 9 Years. Dovid is married with 3 children and is a homeowner in Somerset Walk. He is proud to own his own business that is headquartered right here in Lakewood's industrial park.
Growing up in Lakewood Dovid has seen much change in this town. He remembers driving on Route 9 South 15 years ago in middle of the day with no traffic. Lakewood is a beautiful town with a lot to offer and is a great place to live and raise a family. Dovid would like to show our residents just how much better it can be. Make Lakewood Greater Again!
Dovid’s agenda would include lowering property tax, promoting traffic solutions that include opening, widening and resurfacing our current roads and reassessing any new zoning changes in order to control density without denying homeownership opportunities.

Moshe Raitzik
Moshe is a current member of the BOE whose term expires this December. He has been a teacher for over a decade and is the chairman of the Municipal Alliance which does a lot to help kids and teens at risk.
Moshe has been an active community member of the Westgate community for the last 12 years. He was successful in having JCPL rewire the local electric which prevented the seasonal blackouts. Moshe has been  studying in BMG for the last 15 years

Ray Coles
Ray Has been on the committee for 15 years. When we attempted to work with Ray to promote positive change, he initially pretended to welcome our efforts before finally showing his true colors and rebuffing all of our efforts. If you have seen the negative changes in Lakewood over the past 15 years and are disappointed in the results, you have Ray to thank. Thank him for his service, and now look on to electing others who are interested in promoting positive change for Lakewood. We think that 15 years is just too much for any one person and that it’s finally time for someone new.

In the Democratic primary—Vote Gruman/Raitzik!!

Republican Primary
The Republican Primary will have 5 candidates on the ballot. 1) Aaron Hirsch 2) Avraham Sharaby 3)Yosef Travis 4) Mike Berman 5) Mike Delia. The 2 of them with the most votes in June will go on to compete in the fall election and the 3 who lose will be eliminated completely from any 2017 opportunity.

Aaron Hirsch
Aaron grew up in Brooklyn and moved to Lakewood 4 years ago. He is a homeowner in the Chestnut neighborhood and is married with 3 kids. His father ran P’eylim for many years and had a close relationship with many gedolim including Rav Aharon Kotler Zatzal. He has over 15 years of experience in property management and runs his own business in that field. He was a Shomrim member for 8 years in NY and was also a night dispatcher.
Aaron believes in a common sense approach to complex matters affecting Lakewood. His goal is to use his decades of management experience to institute a culture of responsibility, accountability, and foresight in the Township government. Lakewood is a humble and diverse town. Government needs to serve all of the people. In this humble, yet fast growing town, we cannot afford to continue making simple mistakes that sacrifice our quality of living, future safety, growth, and prosperity for all Lakewood residents. We need to tap into our resources to improve the infrastructure of this Town so we can support the future growth of Lakewood.
Aaron is a firm believer in being proactive in regard to planning. He says that the current approach at the planning and zoning board is tantamount to just putting out fires with little regard to actually planning for our future. He feels that there is a lack of communication between the various departments and would like to bring an enhanced level of responsibility, accountability and communication  to the townships departments and boards.

Avraham Sharaby
Avraham started out in Lakewood in his early 20’s  in BMG where he studied for over a decade. He is a real estate broker in Lakewood and married with 3 children. He is running for township committee in hopes to alleviate the financial suffering and improve the quality of life for all of us living in Lakewood.
Avraham owns a home in Lakewood and says he knows what the taxes of those living in Lakewood look like. He would like the people to pay less in taxes and enjoy more benefits. This is possible! Township land should not be sold at a discount to developers for housing that end up costing us more in taxes and cause traffic. The committee needs to find traffic solutions and then we can reconsider our zoning maps to encourage
responsible development. There needs to be an end to all spot zoning and zoning variances that change the character of neighborhoods and cause traffic.
Avraham believes that should be full transparency of all township activities, including a self-audit to find all wasteful spending and non-essential service to save taxpayers money.
Avraham wants to be part of a Township committee that has the best interests of ALL the people of Lakewood at heart. He wants to be the voice of the people. No longer can we afford a committee that only cares about a select few, we need responsible growth for a better Lakewood.

Yosef Travis
Yosef Travis has lived in Lakewood since 2008 and has watched how this town has grown rapidly over the last couple years. He runs the largest open market exchange for travel points, with over 500 travel agents and points brokers. He is well known within the travel industry as a trusted and respected broker and gets many calls daily regarding issues within the market that have to be dealt with properly. He is also known to go by the moniker—’king of whatsapp’ and was rumored to have won a $600 Million dollar lottery prize which turned out to be a hoax.  It is a well established fact that Yosef Travis’ whatsapp ‘status’ is the best source of up to the minute news.
Yosef sees traffic as a big issue in Lakewood, and says that a lot of the traffic problems are being caused by the over-building and the non-stop approval of new construction throughout the town. He wants to stop the building until we can figure out a planned and coordinated way to build correctly that won't affect the people's quality of life.
If he get elected Yosef says he will fight to have the building halted, have the members of the boards that vote on the building reviewed with new appointments of qualified, non-biased members that do not have connections with developers and or have reason to approve applications. He’d like to make Lakewood a great place to live for the current residents and stop it from being a playground for investors and developers that do not care about the people who's every day lives are being affected.
Yosef lives in the Pine Street corridor, and sitting in traffic is a daily occurrence for him. He want to correct the issues and bring quality of life back to this great town. Yosef made a last minute decision to run and was seen collecting signatures outside Satmar just hours before the deadline.

Mike Berman
Mike Berman is running for 1 reason only. The Republican Club needed to pick 2 candidates to run and the Vaad/Mike Delia did not want any other candidates to get picked. He was placed on the ballot simply as a placeholder to avoid allowing others to have a chance at bringing change to Lakewood. He has no intention of campaigning or winning. He has done this several times before as a favor to the sitting committeeman seeking re-election.

Mike Delia
Mike Delia was on the committee for a 1 year term in 1996. He tried running for another term and in the 1996 election the Vaad wrote a scathing letter listing 6 reasons NOT to support Mike Delia. He then got re-elected to serve from 2015-2017 when the Vaad wanted to eliminate Steven Langert for not blindly listening to them. While at one point he talked the talk, we have not seen any actions from him indicating a willingness to change Lakewood for the better. We’d like to thank Mike for his service and ask Lakewood voters to elect a new committeeman committed to positive change.

Republican Sum up
With so many candidates running, we advise the public to get to know the candidates and hear out their ideas. At this point, our only recommendation for the Republican side is—consider the new candidates and listen to what they have to say and remember—stay away from the incumbents who allowed us to get to this point in the first place!

Debate/Roundtable
A potential debate/roundtable with all of the candidates is being proposed to take place on May 3rd where the candidates will have a chance to introduce themselves and their platform to the community. Stay tuned for further details. While in years past there were only 2 candidates with no proper choice, we look forward to seeing candidates actually attempt to earn votes and to talk to their constituents and present a platform for their campaign.

Other NJ School districts see a rise in busing costs

$

In New Jersey, a state law requires public school districts to transport non public school students or reimburse parents for transportation costs with aid in lieu. These students' parents are paying taxes but not using public school services. Towns in Ocean and Monmouth county are seeing an increase in busing reimbursements APP reports of sharp increases in Jackson, Brick, Howell, Toms River the article naturally puts the blame on private Lakewood schools. But thats not the case in Brick, were 826 children are transported to nonpublic schools most go to christian or other private schools. Even Jackson which according to the report will be busing 800 kids next year however the superintendent is quoted "When we were at our highest enrollment, there was high aid in lieu (reimbursement) numbers – and they weren’t going to Jewish yeshiva schools.”
But its always fun to blame it all on Lakewood.

Power of Gedolim Pictures- Yartzheit of Reb Shaya Kerestirer

This Shabbos 3 Iyar is the Yartzheit of Reb Shaya'la of Kerestirer (1851-1925) one of the famous chasiddic Rebbes from Hungary in the early Twentieth century. Many are making the trip to his Kever and spend Shabbos at his house in northern Hungary. His picture is believed to be a segulah and a amulet of protection. Many stores have his picture to keep away mice.
Here is the The Famous Mouse Story- link.
(see below for story of  how a picture of Rav Aaron Kotler brought someone back to Yiddishkeit)

Reb Shaya Kerestirer
Affectionately known as Reb Shaya'le (Rabbi Yeshaya Steiner of Kerestir), the Kerestirer Rebbe lived around the beginning of the 20th Century. He was a very pious man and extremely humble, always referring to himself in the diminutive (Shaya'le). He was known as a "miraculous" person. His greatest pleasure was to host a very elaborate Melave Malka, the meal that follows Shabbos, on Saturday night. Often he would have his chassidim shecht fresh chickens for his meal.

One motzei Shabbos, while Reb Shaya'le was eating this special melave malka meal, a chossid came to him with an urgent request. He was a man who had a warehouse full of foodstuffs and he made his living by buying an selling food. For the past number of months, his warehouse had been taken over by mice who were eating his grain and other commodities and his entire livelihood was threatened. He asked Reb Shaya'le for a blessing that the mice should leave his warehouse. At that time, each small town in Europe was ruled by the local church pastor. Some of the pastors were kind towards the Jews and others were very harsh. Reb Shaya'le asked the chossid if the pastor of the town he lived in was kind or harsh. The chossid replied that he was very harsh toward the Jews. Reb Shaya'le then instructed the chossid to go to his warehouse and to tell the mice, "Reb Shaya'le says to go to the estate of the pastor." The chossid followed the Rebbe's advice and instantly hundreds of mice raced out of the warehouse all heading in the direction of the pastor's estate. The chossid's business was saved and ever since Jews who have been plagued with this problem have used Reb Shaya'le's picture to accomplish the ridding of mice from their homes.
Story with Picture of Rav Aharon Kotler-

Rav Aharon Kotler
Recently a story about a Bochur who went off the derech, yet he was still living at home and his parents gave him the privacy of his room they did not enter it at all. It so happened that a contractor who was working on the home had to enter the room and to his amazement amongst the not so tzniusdik pictures on the wall and other posters of rock stars and Holywood greats there was a picture of  The Lakewood Rosh hayeshiva Rav Aharon Kotler Z'TL. Not sure what to make of it he discussed it with the boys mother and his rav, he didn't feel it was bakovedik for the picture of Rav Aharon to be hanging on a wall shared with other secular pritzusdiker pictures. The boys mother decided not to make anything of it or speak to her son about it. At least let him have some connection to yiddeshkeit.

Eventually the boy started coming around and joined the family at the shabbos seudos. When asked what helped him make his turn around he explained. He once gave a donation to the Lakewood Yeshiva Beth Medrash Govoha and they sent him a poster of Rav Aaron Kotler. He dosent know why but he hung it on the wall. Something about the picture talked to him and he felt Rav aharon was looking at him.
The current Rosh Yeshiva Rav Malkiel Kotler shlita remarked the Kedusha of the Zaydeh was so powerful even a picture can bring someone back to yiddeshkeit.

The Explosive Growth of Lakewood, NJ – What Does the Future Hold?

$
0
0
With primary elections coming up in lakewood its important to know what is going on and read about the candidates.
Jewishvoiceny.com by Yitzchak Gershner
Explosive Growth
As has been widely reported in recent years, the Orthodox community of Lakewood has been experiencing tremendous growth. In order to serve the community, hundreds of communal institutions have been established, including synagogues, yeshivas, and kollels.
The community faces an enormous strain in accommodating the unceasing demand on resources, including new housing, schools, services etc. A short tour around town will confirm that the growth is continuing unabated. Housing development is continuing at an accelerated rate, with new neighborhoods constantly being built.
Over-development has placed a strain on already limited resources with skyrocketing property taxes and traffic nightmares among the most dire consequences.
Political Implications
In recent years, the political agenda has slowly evolved to align with the special interests of a select few, while ignoring the plight of the population at large. For many Lakewood residents, their quality of life has been significantly impacted. Roads that were built with several thousand people in mind must now accommodate close to one hundred thousand. Growth is possible but without responsibility and accountability, it will lead to chaos.
A recent proposal that came before the township to build a mall in a highly populated area led to a severe public backlash. Under this proposal, the township would have provided land worth a hundred million dollars to developers at absolutely no cost! This shopping center, complete with a theater, would have created a tremendous strain on the already beleaguered town. Traffic would have soared, competitors would have been destroyed and it would have created an unhealthy outlet for youth -weakening the moral fabric of Lakewood. Due to harsh criticism from the community, the project has been suspended. There is no reassurance that this plan could reappear at a future date.
Real Problems - Real Solutions
Avraham Sharaby and Dovid Gruman are running for the Lakewood committee. Sharaby is running on the Republican side and Gruman is running on the Democrat side.
Sharaby started out in Lakewood in his early twenties studying in Beth Medrash Govoha and is currently working as a real estate broker. He is married with three children and once he is elected committeeman, he has concrete plans to alleviate the financial suffering and improve the quality of life.
He has in the last few years, worked closely with politicians and other groups of interest to fight legislation that would harm the sanctity of marriage and permit assisted suicide. His efforts to protect traditional values have been highly successful and a have led to results.
Dovid Gruman is a third generation Lakewood resident. His grandfather was a talmid of Rav Aharon Kotler, ZT’L. Dovid was born in Lakewood and has been living in Lakewood his entire life. He studied in Beth Medrash Govoha for 9 years and is married with three children. Gruman is proud to have his business headquartered right here in Lakewood’s industrial park.

Growing up in Lakewood, Gruman has seen much change in this town. He remembers driving on Route 9, just 15 years ago in middle of the day with no traffic. Lakewood is a beautiful town with a lot to offer and is a great place to live and raise a family. Dovid would like to show our residents just how much better it can be.
It is easy to enumerate problems, but Mr. Sharaby & Mr. Gruman are ready to work with real solutions that would address some of the real issues Lakewood faces. There are no quick fixes but there are immediate steps that can be taken to alleviate the situation. Some of Mr. Sharaby & Mr. Grumans’ suggested proposals include:
*Increasing the township’s income.
*A full revamp of public works.
*Checks and balances on all purchasing decisions. Assessment of privatizing services with a tax credit for certain developments that are putting a strain on services throughout the town.
*Engineering and attorney services should be outsourced to lowest bidders, ensuring no conflict of interests in Lakewood.
*Blue Claws contract should be renegotiated. Stadium should be profitable for township not only for the Blue claws. The stadium can be used for more events off season that benefit Lakewood.
*The Strand Theater should be managed profitably.
*An end to all spot zoning and zoning variances that change the character of neighborhoods and lead to traffic nightmares.
*A self-audit to find all wasteful spending and non-essential services to save taxpayers money. Work with BOE members to identify waste in the educational system. No longer should the committee excuse itself from BOE matters that involve spending township tax dollars.
*Work with the league of municipalities to push Trenton to change the school funding formula which could grant Lakewood taxpayers a sizable savings on property taxes.
*Full transparency on all township activities.
*Focus on federal and state grants to repair infrastructure and areas in need of revitalization. Grant tax incentives to investors willing to fix blighted areas in town.
*A full revamp of the UEZ. Work with future NJ Governors on ideas to benefit the state while granting Lakewood a portion of sales taxes collected to be used for business development only, and not for special interest giveaways.
The Future
Both Sharaby and Gruman want a Township committee that has the best interests of ALL the people of Lakewood at heart. No longer can residents afford a system that favors the interests of a few without consideration for others. They want to create a system where we can address the issues of every area and make Lakewood even greater.
