Lakewood shuttle Purim rules

The Lakewood shuttle costs the taxpayers close to $200,000 a year. On its twitter page the company wrote there will be full service on Purim. No open bottles, riders appearing intoxicated will be denied service. Pls ride responsibly". Instead of encouraging people not to drive and have a way to get around by using the only mode of public transportation they will refuse to transport anyone who appears intoxicated. Interestingly NJ law permits open bottles on buses, trains, from NJ alcohol laws "open bottles of alcohol may be transported in the trunk of a car, and consumption of alcohol on a bus, train, taxi, limousine, or boat is permitted".

TR Mayor: We have no tolerance for anti-Semitic attacks

TOMS RIVER, NJ  Patch.com-- The discovery of threatening anti-Semitic graffiti that included the words "Burn the Jews" at the playground at Riverwood Park has drawn the condemnation of Toms River officials and sparked a bias crime investigation by the Toms River Police Department.

Toms River police were alerted to the existence of anti-Semitic graffiti on March 1, when The Lakewood Scoop published a report about the existence of the graffiti, said Ralph Stocco, spokesman for the Toms River Police Department. The report did not name the playground, and said the incident was reported to the Lakewood Civilian Patrol. Stocco said another news organization contacted the department to confirm the incident, but nothing had been reported to Toms River police.

Police then began working to identify which park and find the graffiti, Stocco said. It was located at the Riverwood Rodeo playground equipment at Riverwood Park, he said, and included the statement, "Burn the Jews," as well as several other foul words, all scratched into the equipment.

"Many (of the words) included obvious spelling errors," Stocco said. Within two hours the offensive phrase was removed by the Buildings and Grounds Department, he said.

“In Toms River, we have no tolerance for anti-Semitic attacks," Toms River Mayor Thomas H. Kelaher said. "We will not accept this reprehensible behavior. This action is being rightfully condemned and thoroughly investigated."

The incident occurred in the wake of growing tensions between local residents and the Orthodox Jewish community in Lakewood. The community's growing population has led to attempts to find homes in nearby towns, including Toms River, and has led to what Toms River officials have labeled unscrupulous real estate practices, including attempts at intimidating residents to sell their homes.

The Toms River Township Council passed an ordinance last week banning all real estate solicitations in the North Dover section of the township -- Riverwood Park falls within the areas covered by the cease-and-desist ordinance. The day after the ordinance was approved, a Lakewood man was arrested and charged with trespassing after he was found inside a home in one of the banned areas. He told police he had been told the home was in foreclosure and that he could look at it for the possibility of buying it.

Committee to hear case on increasing security funding for non public schools

Hamodia.com NEW JERSEY - A bill that would significantly increase security funding for non-public schools is heading for a committee hearing in the New Jersey State Assembly this coming Thursday. If passed, it would increase the present allotment from $25 to $144 per student.

Assemblymen Gary Schaer and Joseph Lagana, both Democrats representing the Bergen and Passaic areas, spearheaded legislation last year that made funding a fixed part of the state’s budget. It was the first time in 20 years that a permanent item was added for non-public schools, but amid increasing terror threats, especially to Jewish institutions, the proposal passed easily. Now, Assemblyman Schaer has introduced a bill to raise the funding level to meet the amount awarded to public school students.

“New Jersey has an equal obligation to protect all of its children, be they public school students, yeshivah students, or whether they attend parochial schools of any faith,” Schaer told Hamodia.

Public school districts throughout the state receive vastly differing amounts of security funding. Assemblyman Schaer said that Fairlawn receives $20 per child, while Newark gets $430. The figure of $144, he said, is based on a statewide average.

Rabbi Avi Schnall of Agudath Israel’s New Jersey division said that funds allotted over the past year have been used by many mosdos to install security cameras and to re-enforce windows and doors, but that this increase would allow many to hire full-time security guards. New Jersey has over 140,000 non-public-school students, roughly 25,000 of whom are from the quickly growing Lakewood community.

“We don’t expect strong opposition,” said Rabbi Schnall, who will be testifying at Thursday’s committee hearing, together with lobbyists from other religious groups. “They are all the state’s children and deserve to be protected.”

The bill calls for funds to be awarded under the same framework as those already in place. Grants must be used exclusively for security expenses and usage must be approved by the district superintendent. However, it is up to each institution to determine how funds will be applied.

“We do not want to dictate to [schools] how they should use the money; each one has its own needs,” said Schaer. He noted that the implementation of a similar program for New York City schools was an encouraging sign for his efforts on the issue. He emphasized that the bill, however, does not mirror New York’s requirement for schools to have a minimum of 300 students, saying that his district had many small yeshivos.

Despite consensus over the need to protect school children, Schaer, who chairs the Assembly’s budget committee, admitted that finding available funds would involve making “hard choices.” Nevertheless, he felt it was imperative to find a solution, adding that the total needed to fund the bill, $24 million, was not a major item in the state’s $34 billion budget.

“The question is: Can the state afford not to do it; can we afford to have children going to school where their safety and lives could be in jeopardy?”

Hearing set for May 3 to work out the issues

Judge denies appeal to keep Bais Horaah open while issues are worked out.  -NEWS12NJ.com  reports " A New Jersey judge has denied several business owners access to their building while issues with the certificates of occupancy are worked out. The building, located on Madison Avenue, houses a Federal Savings Bank, the Bais Hora'ah rabbinical school and the Lakewood Conference Center. However, according to the township’s code enforcement officer, the building is only approved to have the bank inside.
The Bais Hora'ah rabbinical school reportedly holds daily prayer services inside the building, and township officials say the building is not zoned for that. Officials also say there is not enough parking to handle three different businesses. Code enforcement agents were forced to board up the building four times because the tenants kept prying off the boards and going back inside. Property owner David Gluck filed a request that would allow the tenants to stay while the issues are worked out. His attorney argued that places of worship are allowed in downtown Lakewood. But state Superior Court Assignment Judge Marlene Lynch Ford denied the request. A full hearing will be held on May 3 to work out the issues."

Florham Park, NJ, March 3, 2016 … The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) today strongly condemned the anti-Semitic vandalism discovered at Ridgewood Park in Toms River, NJ calling it a “reprehensible display of hate.” The words “Burn the Jews” and other obscene words were discovered on March 1 scratched into playground equipment at the Riverwood Rodeo playground at Riverwood Park.
“This reprehensible display of hate is a sobering reminder that anti-Semitism has the potential to rear its ugly head, and that New Jersey towns and cities are not immune to anti-Jewish animus,” said Joshua Cohen, ADL New Jersey Regional Director. “We applaud the Toms River Police Department for addressing this incident with the seriousness and speed that it deserves, and hope that the perpetrators of this anti-Semitic crime will be brought to justice.” ADL regularly assists law enforcement and communities in response to hate related incidents, and has been in contact with the Mayor’s Office and the Toms River Police Department to offer its resources and expertise.
