Vaad statement on Murphy pick for AG

Governor Elect Phil Murphy made history today by nominating well respected Bergen County Prosecutor Gurbir Grewal to be New Jersey’s next Attorney General. Grewal will be the first Sikh-American in history to serve as Attorney General in any state in the U.S.

As a bearded man who wears a turban, Grewal is certainly sensitive to the potential discrimination that individuals can face due to their race, religion and/or ethnicity. He displayed this sensitivity – and, more so, the willingness to act – during the recent battle against Mahwah’s ban against out of state residents using its parks. That ban was aimed to prevent Orthodox Jews from the nearby Monsey area from using Mahwah’s parks.

Prosecutor Grewal was the first major law enforcement official to act against the ban. In a July 27 letter, Grewal instructed Mahwah Police Chief James N. Batelli not to enforce the ban. He cited the fact that enforcement would likely be based on the ethnicity of park goers – targeted against Orthodox Jews – especially since it followed calls from Mahwah residents to police reporting “Hasidic” visitors.

In October, Current Attorney General Christopher Porrino also took a strong stance against Mahwah, filing a complaint in Bergen County Superior Court against the town’s actions, and demanded a return of $3.4 million in state grants received by Mahwah.

Townships near Lakewood, such as Jackson, Toms River, and Howell have also faced criticism and/or legal actions related Township ordinances that target Orthodox Jews in the region. OPRA revelations, including many involved Jackson officials, show that an ugly subtext lay beneath those official actions. The Grewal nomination will likely send a clear message that discrimination will not be tolerated anywhere in New Jersey.

“We congratulate Gurbir Grewal upon his historic nomination,” says Rabbi Moshe Weisberg of The Lakewood Vaad. “We look forward to working together to ensure that every individual in our state is protected – equally – by the law and its enforcement

Rav Shteinman's Tzavaah for Lakewood: Establish a Vaad Hachinuch

$

The City of Lakewood, NJ was Zoche to host  Rav Shteinman Zatzal 4 times while he came to give chizuk in chutz Laaretz. Despite his old age Rav Shteinman traveled all over the world giving chizuk to yidden in frum communities. During one of his visits to Lakewood either in 2006 or 2010 a meeting took place at the home of the Lakewood Rosh yeshiva, in attendance were roshei mosdos roshei Chabura and other askanim. The discussion surrounded Chinuch issues and Rav Shteinman encouraged those assembled to create A vaad Hachinuch that will be staffed by Mechanchim and Rebbeim to deal with the school acceptance issue. Unfortunately to this day it has not happened, it's time to establish it now.
While there are selfless individuals who deal with placing children in schools, a vaad hachinuch is essential to make sure kids get placed in the right school that suits their needs. The decisions should be made by Mechanchim as Rav Aaron Leib suggested. Watch the famous Video of Rav Shteinman were he adamantly yells Gaaveh Gaaveh gaaveh pertaining to not taking kids in to school for "Frummeh cheshboines"  גאווה, גאווה גאווה.

JNC: OU Responds issue With Toeiva announcement resolved

Jewish News Channel Exclusive:
The OU responds to Open Orthodox embrace  By Shmerel Ding - December 11, 2017
In light of Hebrew Institute of Riverdale’s embrace of to’eva relationships. The Orthodox Union OU has been prodded to confront the schism Open Orthodoxy is making within Judaism, as previously reported by Jewish News Channel. Below is the official statement sent out today to the inquiring public.
Thank you for contacting the OU. The OU has been in touch with Hebrew Institute of Riverdale to discuss the OU’s recent policy statement, as set forth below. The discussions have been respectful, with the exchange of differing perspectives. The OU is pleased that the issue has been resolved in accordance with the OU’s policies, as set forth in its statement, as HIR has agreed to refrain from the practice we addressed. HIR has requested that we note that it was not their intention to create a public discussion or controversy.

December 5 OU Statement: It is the OU’s unequivocal position that support for, or celebration of, halachically proscribed conduct is fundamentally inappropriate. Accordingly, the institutional endorsement or encouragement (implicit or explicit) of any conduct that is contrary to halacha is activity that no Orthodox synagogue should allow. With this principle in mind, we are currently in the process of reviewing our synagogue standards to determine whether further comment, or other action, is appropriate. Sincerely, The Web(be) Rebbe Orthodox Union Kashruth Division

The Torah is unequivocal in its condemnation of same gender relationships. The Torah is non negotiable and not open for talks and policy discussions. It is still unclear if the OU will do the right thing and expel Hebrew Institute of Riverdale and others who accept expression of forbidden behavior or will the OU adopt a “don’t ask, don’t tell policy” allowing individual congregations free rein to trample the Torah as long as it doesn’t create bad publicity? We will be following this issue closely and hope the Orthodox Union does the correct thing so the wider orthodox public can continue relying on them for kashrus services. Amongst bnei torah the void felt by Rav Yisroel Belsky’s passing is only growing

Lakewod Public Schools Get Failing grade in State report

Lakewood's public school district got a failing grade in most areas on its own report card, according to a recent report.  APP reports The district failed in areas of instruction and program, fiscal management and governance. In two others – operations and personnel – the district excelled.  The Bard held a meeting this week but there was no discussion abut the report. The one hour meeting "mostly included fanfare over a student art contest." writes the APP.
Michael Inzelbuch, the board attorney, said a lack of discussion did not mean apathy on the part of the board. “Discussion is great but action speaks louder than words," he said.

Lakewood's district is unique. According to state statistics, more than 90 percent of its students are minorities, and nearly 60 percent speak Spanish at home.
Funding is allotted per student, which does not account for more than 30,000 private school and yeshiva students for whom the district must provide some services.

The district's finances are overseen by state monitors Mike Azzara and David Shafter, who have broad veto power over the district's financial decisions.
When it comes to fiscal management, the district improved eight percentage points in three years. David Sciarra, director of the Education Law Center, which advocates for public school students, said that was not marked improvement."This raises a serious question about whether these monitors are doing their job," he said.  Read more at APP.com

Open Enrollment Deadline is Tomorrow

From Cosmo Insurance
Many Americans still have not signed up for health insurance.  The open enrollment deadline is days away and if people fail to sign up, they’ll find themselves having to pay the Obamacare penalty next year. Most Americans don’t know that you have a 30 day look period to try out your new health insurance plan.  There are other things to look for the last of people who have not signed up yet.  HeatlhCare.com gives five other tips for these Americans:

 1.       There’s an estimated 4.5 million uninsured Americans who qualify for a bronze plan with no monthly cost.  Even those who won’t use their health insurance can get free preventative care and avoid the Obamacare tax penalty.

2.       See if you qualify for an Obamacare tax exemption.  If you aren’t receiving subsidies to pay for your health insurance, the cost of your plan may be high enough to keep you from paying the penalty for going without health insurance.
3.       Your current insurance plan may change the prescriptions they cover.  Make sure you check if your plan will cover the prescriptions you need.
4.       You should maybe be getting a temporary health plan if you are waiting for your other coverage to start.  They can protect you in cases of emergency and are affordable.

5.       Look into alternatives to Obamacare coverage.

Call Cosmo Insurance to sign up for health insurance before the deadline.  We can guide you to choosing the insurance and benefits you need.
