LPD-On Wednesday, February 28th be prepared for high-volume traffic throughout the town for the preparation of Purim that will end the nibghtfall of Thursday, March 1st.

Purim can be a very fun and exciting holiday. However, if safety precautions are not followed it can be very dangerous.  Please be aware that the Lakewood Police Department will be around to keep everyone safe.

Please celebrate responsibly! Drinking and driving do not mix, please make sure that there are designated drivers. Please also be aware that providing alcohol to someone under the age of 21 is illegal and it can be dangerous! Also fireworks are very dangerous and illegal in New Jersey!!

Be alert to the fact that, in their excitement, children may not be careful when crossing the street. Always be on the lookout for youngsters jutting out from in between cars.

Please be considerate to your neighbors during this time of celebration, especially in the late evening hours. By being aware of circumstances and taking a few precautions, we can have a safe and happy Purim.

LPD: Statement on False Threat to Lakewood High School

LPD
Earlier this morning we received an email, via our department website, that made reference to “blowing up” or “shooting up” an unnamed school.  Upon receiving the threat, Detectives immediately took steps to identify the location from which the email was sent. Within a few minutes we were able to determine that it was sent from the Lakewood High School and had the name of a potential suspect.

The information was relayed to our Officers assigned to the schools as well as responding personnel. After advising school administrators, a decision was made to lock-down the students in place by school officials. Officers and K9 units from the Ocean County Sheriff’s Department ensured that the school was free from explosive devices.

Further investigation by Detectives Mike Cavallo and Lynn Miller, revealed after speaking with two 17 year old students, that the email was sent as a hoax. One of the students sent our website the email but used the other students identifiers.  Both students were attending a Business Law class at the time the message was sent from a school computer. It was later determined that the student who’s identifiers were used did not play a role in the hoax.

As a result, the juvenile who was determined to have sent the unamusing  message was charged with Creating a False Public Alarm and Terroristic Threats. He was released a short time later pending a juvenile hearing.

More Supermarkets coming to Lakewood

National Supermarket chains from across the US will be opening branches in Lakewood, NJ. Following the success of of kosher markets popping up all over, it only makes sense to follow suit and open stores in the strong Lakewood Osher food market. A List of those who plan to open Albertsons, Ralphs, Path mark, ShopRite, Trader Joes, Wegmans, kroger, Whole Foods, and kosher arkets from Israel Europe and beyond.

Anti Eruv Group teams up with Local Rabbonim

Those opposed to an Eruv in several  NJ towns have come up with a idea to team up with Local Rabbis in the Lakewood area  in an attempt to use halacha to stop building Eruvin.  At the initial meeting they had a hard time pronouncing words and understanding the concepts of Gud Asik, and Mefulash, but they will try whatever it takes. Hey, its strange bedfellows but by partnering with the Rabbonim they hope to have a stronger case. If a Rav from Brooklyn cant make an Eruv in Lakewood they hope to do the same for their communities.

New Takkanos proposed for Parlor Meetings

Askanim are floating the idea of new Takanos for Parlor meetings and other fundraising events requiring Mosdos to have a change in the menu. Its very not bakovodig to schlep people to a event and not serve them properly. Sponge cake, Seltzer and cookies has long fallen by the wayside. There should be a minimum requirement for: 3-4 hot dishes, preferebly a 7 course meal (not in the 9 days) Sushi rolled on the spot, Wine tasting and live music is a must. Optional choice of cigar rolling or a Hookka bar. To enforce the new rules the Rabbonim and Roshei Yeshiva will not attend unless these new guidelines are strictly enforced.

Breathalyzers installed at Chasuna halls

wedding halls in Lakewood will now install a breathalyzer near the exits making sure everyone gets home safely. This will be implemented in response to recent incidents were wedding guests have had a L'chaim too many. Tis is a pilot program, if successful it will soon be mandatory for bar Mitzvas and Fundraising events.

Life size standees of politicians go up in town square

Its very frustrating when you talk to someone but they dont respond to you. That is the feeling you get when you attend meetings at the Lakewood town hall As one resident said, we come to the meetings but we feel like we talk to the wall, its a one way conversation the members just look and bob their heads but dont talk back. Someone came up with the idea instead of going to the meetings  on their time to see the puppets, why not just yell at the life size figures of the politicians on our own time. You wont get cut off and can talk for more than 5 minutes.

Gezira or no Gezeira

while the debate continues is there or isn't there a Geziras Giyus one need to look no further than the Megillah. The Nes of Purim is that Mordechai  was able to convince Klal Yisrael that there actually is a Gezeira even to those who were skeptic or in denial.

Talk on lifting the Stadium ban

Officials and representatives of the ball club met to discuss how to increase attendance from the local community. One idea came out that its about time the ban be lifted. Its not anymore a shtut but its a metropolis. The Chasidim moving in have been going to stadiums for asifos and other gatherings there is no reason we should deny them that privilege. Also Lakewood has the first Movie theater with Kosher food, a electronic Billboard with Hebrew words, the time is ripe to let the olam enjoy baseballs past time. Arrangements will be made for those living in the vicinity to prepay for shabbos games.

Name change proposed

As the community continues to expand beyond its borders with the influx of Brooklyn residents a petition was sent out by the Vaad and Lakewood Neighbors asking for ideas to rename the area. some of the submissions: Palm Tree south, Zalis' south, Satu Marie on the Lake, Chaim's River, Jackobs son, Beigel hole, the Groiyseh apple, The Vaad was leaning to the Groiseh apple name as it resembled most to Bad apples.

Exclusive First report Breaking News

A Lakewood resident was driving on the Garden State Parkway near exit 109 and saw a Deer on the side of the road. In another developing story a Lakewood resident ate breakfast in Toms River.

Authorities to crack down on wondering Yeshiva boys

They are known as the wedding crashers or the better yet, as the clean up crew. Its a problem ballei simcha have to cope with giving supper nightly to hundreds of hungry boys who just dont get full from the yeshiva supper. They took advantage of the nightly social scene in town hitting up every wedding, parlor meting and fundraising events. After Menahlim tried to shut down food establishments the boys got smarter and take advantage of the free food at simchos. Chaveirim and other first responders will now patrol wedding halls sending the boys back to the yeshivas.

Arcade company makes 3D game of Lakewood Roads
A Entrepreneur took videos of Lakewood roads and incorporated it into a arcade game where you have to avoid car crashes and pedestrians. Its a unfortunate situation but it was an opportunity to make a buck. The company insists those who play the game will be prepared ahead of time how to navigate  Lakewood roads in a safer way. Geico will ow make it mandatory to play if you want coverage.

Nor’easter Bringing Heavy Rains, High Winds and Snow to NJ

A nor'easter is battering New Jersey on Friday, now reaching norther Ocean county includng Lakewood. It's supposed to get worse as some parts of the state could get a foot of snow. Tropical-storm wind gusts and nearly 3 inches of rain are expected to happen elsewhere.

Strong wind gusts and heavy rain already knocked down some trees and utility poles in New Jersey. "Near blizzard" conditions were expected in the northern parts of the state, but forecasters say snow was possible throughout New Jersey.

A number of crashes, delays and flooding incidents were emerging on New Jersey roads on Friday, holding back the New Jersey commute. Flooding was also holding up trains in Hoboken, and water was seeping into train cars.

More than 40 school districts closed, delayed openings or even called for an early dismissal as they prepared for a storm that forecasters say could turn into a "bomb cyclone. Read More at Patch

Purim at KNA Lakewood

The PR outreach continues with a video (see below) by Lakewood Neighbors explaining Lakewood's 2500 year old Purim party followed up by a report in the Asbury park Press on a Purim party in Lakewood.

APP: LAKEWOOD - They poured out of school buses and minivans and stretched-out Hummer limousines.
For hours into early Thursday morning, these young men – dressed as Santa Claus and a watermelon and a bright yellow Minion and you name it – danced danced danced and jumped jumped jumped inside Lakewood's synagogues and homes, celebrating the Jewish holiday of Purim.

A deafening live band – thump thump thump – provided the metronome fueling the frenetic atmosphere overnight inside synagogue Kollel Ner Avrohom, tucked behind Georgian Court University on Arbutus Drive. Take a look inside the party in the video at the top of this story.

Richard Roberts, a former pharmaceutical company executive and political donor famous for his philanthropy, handed out checks and vouchers from a police guarded-table in a corner of the synagogue, which he supports, occasionally taking a break to dance dance dance along with the thump thump thump, too.

The holiday, often equated to Halloween or dubbed "Jewish Mardi Gras," is
marked by donning costumes, giving and receiving charity and food gifts, fasting and feasting. It's a 2,500-year-old tradition that celebrates the salvation of the Jews from a plot to annihilate them in ancient Persia.

"God commanded us to give to charity," Roberts said. "On Purim, we give to Jewish causes and Jewish charities, but Jews give to everyone throughout the year."

Groups of young men, often in matching costumes, made multiple stops Wednesday night collecting donations that can bring in tens of thousands of dollars for their schools and synagogues. About 2,300 Purim partiers passed through Kollel Ner Avrohom, just one example of the festivities in Orthodox Jewish communities around the world. Read more at APP.com

Report: DOJ Investigating Howell Zoning Board Decision to Deny School Application

$
0
0
In 2015 the Howell Zoning Board denied a application to build a orthodox school. Congregation Kollel filed a federal lawsuit in May of 2016 against Howell Township and its zoning board claiming the denial of its plan to build a religious education center was motivated by religious "hostility." Last week a Judge refused to dismiss the case and ruled the lawsuit can proceed.

Now APP reports The Department of Justice is investigating whether a Zoning Board decision that denied a 2015 application to build an Orthodox school with dormitories was rooted in Antisemitism, according to Mayor Theresa Berger. App reports, the Mayor, Deputy Mayor Robert Nicastro and Councilman Bob Walsh are expected to have taxpayer-funded lawyers appointed for them in connection with the investigation. The nature of the investigation – and whether it's civil or criminal – is still unclear. read more at APP.com
