APP Reports-  A Lawsuit has been filed in superior court by a group called Lakewood Citizens for Fiscal Integrity and Lakewood resident  Larry S. Loigman against the Township and its mayor.

Lakewood's former township manager, who got a $327,000 severance package when he resigned in September, received "hush money" to stay quiet about municipal affairs in violation of state law, a group claims in a lawsuit filed Monday. The lawsuit alleges Lakewood Mayor Ray Coles "engaged in a conspiracy" with the former township manager, Thomas Henshaw, and other township officials, to reach Henshaw's separation agreement. Henshaw's separation agreement provided for $327,000 in payments, which includes his salary through the end of 2019. The suit claims Henshaw should have received far less money just a few months' salary."

“Such extraordinary payment was intended as ‘hush money’ to buy Defendant Henshaw’s silence as to municipal affairs," the lawsuit stated.
Coles and Lakewood Township attorney Steven Secare said Monday the lawsuit was frivolous. read more at APP.com

Traffic in Lakewood Causing people to Lose Parnassah

$

Its election season and soon they will boast about the traffic improvements and fixes that were made over the year. Traffic has a In some spots it may have eased up but overall the traffic is terrible.
Its no laughing matter but people in Lakewood rely on Waze to get to work for a commute that should take no more than a 10 minute drive takes over a half hour. People can not make it to work on time and are docked for the missing hours loosing their pay. Congestion also takes an economic toll on the economy and businesses lost productivity of workers sitting in traffic, the increased cost of transporting goods through congested areas,  wasted fuel, among other factors.

30 minute on rt 9 traffic, Central avenue over 25 minute delays, James/pine street backed up even with a cop directing traffic! It feels a bit quicker but you end up sitting at the other new traffic lights. Prospect/Williams, County Line, Cedarbridge with daily back ups. .The new developments at Oak Vine and elsewhere are adding more cars, while there was no improvements or roads built to improve the infrastructure. Playgroup morahs were forced to close or relocate because parents could no longer drop off because of the traffic.

Residents  who complain are told to get used to it "Lakewood is now a city" if its a city where is the city planning by the Township committee?
Can they look everyone in the face and show what what was done to fix the infrastructure after they passed the master plan. They will just Blame everyone else blame the county blame the state blame blame blame, take no responsibility and expect to get the votes too..

8 Cheshvan 18 Girls still not in School while Registration opens for next Year!

Schools are opening registration for the next school year, Politicians and askanim are busy posing for photo ops  but for 18 Elementary school girls they are still waiting for a school for this coming year. A few years ago there were 9 high school girls sitting home untill a few weeks before chanuka when they got in to school. They said we wont allow this to go on again! Well its 2 weeks in and 18 girls are sitting at home.

After the Ateres Esther school in Lakewood closed, not all girls were placed. additionally there are still some high school girls with no school yet. Perhaps this should call for a Yom Tefillah on behalf of these neshamos that are on the streets for no fault of their own. Why is this not a priority!

Property Tax Increase in Lakewood

$

0
Lakewood tax rate increased to 2.098%. That means, homeowners will now pay $2,098 a year in property tax for every $100,000 assessed value of their home. A home evaluated at $500,000 will pay over $10,000 in  property taxes.

After the township recently reassessed  all the properties in Lakewood last year the values went up but the tax rate was lowered to 1.95%. Now they raised the rate to 2.098%.
A report in the Lakewood shopper says that owners of older homes in Lakewood got hit the hardest with their taxes going up over $1000 a year.  Since those homes were appraised much lower, after the reassessment they received much higher appraisals for the estimated values of their homes and the property taxes went way up. The prices of real estate in town has gone up thanks to the many outsiders moving into Lakewood who are paying higher prices for their homes. Moving away is not an option for old time residents who have nowhere to go and would like to remain in their current homes. The older homes do not have rental incomes from basements to help cover the taxes but share the same tax rate as the new construction homes. Property taxes have been raised twice since the
reassessment mainly due to the financially cash strapped school system. It’s only getting worse since the township owes the state close to 40 million dollars that will have to be paid back by Lakewood tax payers. Gov Murphy funding formula decreased money from Lakewood.

A Few Tips for the Gabbai about Hagaba on Sefer Breishis

$
0
0
Dear Gaabai, Please make sure that Hagba during these weeks is performed in a way that is proper kavod haTorah and shouldn't give anyone in shul, heart failure. There's been too many close calls where people near the bima end up catching the sefer.

As we read the parshios of Breishis  the sefer Torah is rolled  that the left side is heavier making it harder for a righty to lift up during Hagbah. The newer sifrei Torah are lighter but older sifrei torah  are heavier.

The Mishna Berura writes that Hagbah  should be given to someone who has the strength to lift and turn the Torah without needing to sit immediately. If one knows they do not have the strength to do it properly they should decline the honor. Although generally one should not turn down an invitation for an Aliyah, we don’t find this with Hagbah, albeit the greater honor.
 A Few important tips:

 1) Please whoever is performing Hagbaa ask them if they have the strength and technique to lift the sefer Torah. Try giving to lefty's or able bodied men.

2) Gelilah should also be given to someone with knowledge to immediately secure the atzei chaim and begin rolling the sefer Torah

3) Very important for the Gabbai to stand nearby within an arms length until after gelilah is done.

Thank You
K. H.

APP Editorial- Unfair to Stereotype the community

$

Its calling selling newspapers and going after the little guy.

APP- We understand that stories we write can influence public perceptions of community groups – and we don’t use references to ethnicity without careful consideration of whether doing so is relevant. In most circumstances, we don’t feel it is relevant to include an individual’s ethnicity.

- "We have written a number of stories about Lakewood officials who have been charged with corruption and have abused their positions for personal gain. But it's unfair to stereotype the broader Orthodox community on the basis of the greed of a few Lakewood officials. Corrupt leaders can be
found among all religious, ethnic and political groups. Lakewood's Orthodox community faces a greater challenge, though, in trying to alter the negative perception. Anti-Semitism exists. And it is further fueled by zoning and planning policies in Lakewood that have led to overcrowding, clogged streets and financial stresses on the school system.

To help counter the bias and stereotyping, the Orthodox leaders making an effort to improve the negative perception of the Orthodox community must speak out publicly and forcefully against corrupt officials, and work to root out those who seek to take advantage of their public positions."
