Gov Murphy in Jerusalem with  Rabbi Kotler
NJ Governor Phil Murphy is currently on a visit to Israel for a economic mission to strengthen ties with the state.  Rabbi Aaron Kotler of BMG in Lakewood, Chabad of NJ Rabbi Yosef and Mendy Carlebach and members of the Jewish Federation of NJ accompanied the Gov on his trip.
The Governor Tweeted from the Holy Land

"Anti-Antisemitism cannot and will not be tolerated in New Jersey, and we will continue to stand with all of our communities of faith. Groups that target religious communities do not represent the values of the Garden State."

While in Israel the Governor learned of the passing of his father in law father of his wife Tammy Mr. Edward Brown Snyder. Tammy Murphy told NJ media  she distinctly remembers being with her father who is Jewish at the Western Wall, where she'll pay tribute to him there during the envoy's scheduled trip to the holy site on Tuesday. In a joint statement they said:

"We consider ourselves lucky and blessed to have been able to speak with him one last time, only twelve hours before his passing As a proud member of the Jewish faith, his final ask of us was to continue our trip to Israel. Ever the mensch, he left specific instructions for services to wait until our return. With heavy hearts and tears in our eyes, we will dedicate our presence in this holy land to his memory.”

BDE: Harav Yitzchok Paler ZT"L Rosh Yeshivas Mekor Chaim of Lakewood

It is with great shock and sadness to reports the sudden passing of Rav Yitzchok Paler zt”l, Rosh yeshiva of Yeshiva Mekor Chaim in Lakewood, NJ. He was 67 years old. Rav Paler was a son of Harav Binyomin Paler zt’l, the previous Rosh Yeshiva.

Rav Paler suffered a massive heart attack earlier tonight and was niftar a short while later. The Levaya is scheduled tentatively for 1:00 pm Monday October 22 at the Yeshiva  160 Locust street in Lakewood with the kvurah taking place in Eretz Yisrael. The yeshiva relocated from Boro Park to Lakewood 6 years ago.

From Matzav- Rav Yitzchok was a son of Rav Binyomin Paler zt”l, who was one of the closest talmidim of Rav Yitzchok Zev Soloveitchik, the Brisker Rov. During World War II, Rav Binyomin joined the Mirrer Yeshiva and escaped the horrors of the Holocaust in Europe by finding refuge with the yeshiva in Shanghai. After the war, Rav Binyomin joined his chaver, Rav Leib Malin, from the Mir, in establishing Yeshivas Bais Hatalmud in Brooklyn. The next year, he was appointed as a maggid shiur at Yeshivas Chasan Sofer, the yeshiva headed by his father-in-law, Rav Shmuel Ehrenfeld, the Mattersdorfer Rov. Rav Binyomin eventually became the rosh yeshiva there.

In 1965, Rav Binyomin opened his own yeshiva, Yeshiva Mekor Chaim. The name of the yeshiva was given by Rav Moshe Feinstein zt”l to demonstrate that Rav Binyomin was continuing the mesorah established by Rav Chaim Brisker. In 1976, a mesivta was opened.

Following Rav Binyomin’s petirah, Rav Paler was succeeded by his three sons, Rav Yitzchok zt”l, and ybl”c Rav Zechariah and Rav Simcha Bunim.

In 2012, after being located in Brooklyn for almost 50 years, Mekor Chaim relocated to Lakewood, where it settled on Locust Street. Rav Yitzchok likewise moved to Lakewood, where he lived on Charming Way.

Rav Yitzchok led Yeshiva Mekor Chaim together with his brothers in an outstanding display of unity and chavershaft.

Rav Yitzchok was a tremendous masmid, a talmid chochom of note, and a rosh yeshiva whose hadracha was sought by his talmidim. His ne’imus and aidelkeit were so unique, and his soft-spoken nature was inspiring to behold.

Rav Yitzchok spent his life between the koslei bais hamedrash, studying under his father’s tutelage and later raising generations of bnei Torah in the mesorah of his father and his father’s rabbeim.

Rav Yitzchok’s passing has plunged his many talmidim and the greater American olam haTorah into mourning.

Rav Yitzchok is survived by his wife, Rebbetzin Yocheved Paler, and their beautiful family of bnei and bnos Torah following in his ways.

Levayah details will be posted when they are finalized.

Hagaon Harav Shlomo Korach, zt”l. The oldest Teimani Rav in Eretz Yisrael he learned in Lakewood yeshiva  was a Talmid Muvhak of Hagaon Harav Aharon Kotler, zt”l.
Hamodia- The Teimani community in Eretz Yisrael mourns the petirah of the eldest Teimani Rav, Hagaon Harav Shlomo Korach, zt”l, Chief Rabbi of Bnei Brak.
Harav Korach was 84 at his petirah. He was unwell in recent months and was hospitalized in Yerushalayim’s Shaarei Zedek hospital, where he passed away early Monday.
He was born in Sanaa, Yemen. As a child he learned under the tutelage of Harav Chaim Salah, as well as his grandfather Harav Amram Korach, the last Rav of Yemenite Jewry.

His family moved to Eretz Yisrael in 5709/1949, settling in Yerushalayim. One of his sisters “disappeared” as did many of the Yemenite children who moved to Eretz Yisrael during those years.

Rav Shlomo learned in Yeshivas Mekor Chaim as well as Yeshivas Ohr Yisrael in Petach Tikva. In 5713/1953, he learned in Yeshivas Mercaz Harav in Yerushalayim, and later in Yeshivas Ponevez in Bnei Brak. He also spent some time in Lakewood, New Jersey, where he learned under Hagaon Harav Aharon Kotler, zt”l.

After he married, Rav Shlomo learned in the Ponevez kollel, and was later appointed as a Rav in Bnei Brak. He was the first Rav of Bnei Brak, as recognized by the Chief Rabbinate.

The Rav was one of the foremost Teimani Rabbanim; he wrote a number of sefarim on the minhagim and halachos of the Teimani community.

His levayah is to be held Monday afternoon from his beis medrash, Chanichei Hayeshivos, in Bnei Brak, proceeding from there to Yerushalayim, where he will be buried in the Sanhedria cemetery.

Yehi zichro baruch.

Why The media reports on Lakewood

$
0
0
Judy Franco  from NJ101.5 responds to the media and radio station coverage of stories pertaining to Lakewood. Why the media loves to jump on stories about Lakewood, specifically in response to the amnesty program.

From her opinion piece -I received these letters (along with many similar ones from Jewish listeners in and out of the Lakewood community) after our station’s news and opinion shows covered the story.

“The press rarely reports about our low crime rate, our strong families, our beautiful communities, our Chesed, [kindness] our tzedaka [charity] how we pay hundreds of millions in taxes and get near zero back, nor will it portray us as decent people. Instead we are typecast as evil: Case in point: the APP ran the story of Medicaid fraud well over 100 times. A much bigger Medicaid fraud story with fifty two non-Jewish families in Pennsylvania ran exactly two times in any media. A school in Eatontown that was convicted of stealing millions from veterans merited two stories -while the [special needs school] SCHI story ran over 50 times. The APP comments pages are routinely filled with calls to gas the Jews, kill us all, drive us out and deny us our rights.”
And this:

“Why does your station feel the need to highlight these stories on its talk shows when they know it’s only going to invite nasty comments about Jews from your callers saying things they would never say about blacks, Hispanics or Muslims?”
And it IS true. These stories get more press and attention than similar stories involving non-Jews. A simple Google search will verify it.

I’ll be honest: I considered talking about the Medicare fraud amnesty story on the air because I KNOW it’s something people want to talk about. But taking into account the anti-Semitic calls and commentary these stories inevitably elicit, I decided not to. I opted instead to examine why this fascination with Jews doing bad things exists — and an interesting parable came to mind.

The other day a topic came up on the air and we ran with it: What’s the dumbest thing you’ve ever done at work? A guy called in and said he made a technical mistake as a mechanic’s apprentice that caused a beautiful Corvette to be crushed right before his eyes. The reaction? “No! Not a corvette?!” Of course the story caused gasps and groans all around. We said, “Couldn’t it have been a Ford Focus??!!” But the story simply wouldn’t have been nearly as dramatic or interesting had the car been a Ford Focus.

At the risk of comparing the Lakewood Orthodox Jewish community to a luxury car(!), I think the message is clear: The higher a standard people are expected to uphold, the more dramatic (and newsworthy) it is, when they fail to do so. The unexpected, the ironic, the dramatic is what makes a good news story. And since Orthodox Jews commit so few crimes relative to the rest of the world, of course it’s a juicer story when they do.

When a community as devout, and as charity minded as the Orthodox Jewish community shows its few bad apples, it’s like watching a luxury car getting crushed into bits. There’s just something about it people love.

Are there people who want to justify their hatred of Jews by seeing them steal or cheat or otherwise fail to uphold the high moral standard that they’ve set for themselves and the rest of the world? Yes. But the simple reality is, the masses just like an amazing story. And those masses will find it just as interesting when an elected official takes a bribe, a police officer commits a drug crime, or a priest is accused of sexual abuse. Why? Because the mayor, the cop and the priest are people for whom we have high expectations—people who have, by society’s standards, set a high bar for morality and have fallen off.

I have chosen to look at it this way because I believe deep down, people inherently understand that regardless of what prejudices people have against them, religious Jews, like other devoutly religious communities, have set the standard for human behavior and morality. Hence, there’s a tiny bit of joy in all of us when a religious person sins. Because after all, WE can’t be that bad if even THEY can mess up.

Now I’m also not naive: I know that many people who call in to our station in response to these stories are breathlessly venting their latent Jew-hatred. They’re just waiting for the opportunity to publicly say what they have been yearning to say for so long to someone who will give them the forum: “I JUST DON’T LIKE THOSE PEOPLE NO MATTER WHAT THEY DO, GOOD OR BAD!”

The media, however, are a different story. They’re just telling the stories that make people want to read, listen or click. Because as human beings, though we may be good citizens, good parents, good friends and good people, we still get a kick out of watching a Corvette get smashed to smithereens.

Lakewood School District spends $30,441 per student

In a list of the top 50 NJ school districts that spend the most per student, Lakewood is at number 20 paying  $30,441 per student. The school district has close to 6000 students enrolled. Nearby Asbury Park is at number 3 paying  $36,957 per pupil. The list was compiled by NJ advanced media.

The average New Jersey school district spent $20,849 per student during the 2016-17 school year, about a $500 increase from the year before, according to new data released by the state.
Statewide, per-pupil spending ranged from about $10,000 at one charter school to about $60,000 at a tiny district along the Jersey Shore.

Some of the highest spending districts are some of the smallest, those that need a building and full staff for just a small number of students. But there are also plenty of large districts that spend a lot per student, including both K-12 districts and regional high schools. NJ.com
