Competition is a good thing. Pesach food shopping is in full swing and the price wars have begun. The Lakewood supermarkets and grocery stores are advertising sales and specials on many products. Stores also are selling cheaper by the case at discounted prices. Options of ordering in bulk through the likes of Moadim L'simcha or local shuls also help ease the financial burden. Special Pesach circulars were sent out with many sale items for yom tov shopping. The addition of new supermarkets in Lakewood at least for now has brought down food prices and forced other stores to be competitive. Eventually prices will go up but for now food shopping has become somewhat affordable.

Toms River honors man who rescued jewish baby in fatal crash
VIN Lakewood, NJ - Just one month after the horrific death of an Orthodox Jewish mother from Toms River in a collision, a local man was honored for rescuing her infant daughter from the mangled wreck.
As previously reported on VIN News, Leah Eisdorfer of Toms River was driving on New Hampshire Avenue on March 9th when her vehicle inexplicably crossed the yellow line and plunged down an embankment, killing the 28 year old instantly.
William Copes, who was driving on the same road, pulled his car over and ran to offer his assistance, rescuing the baby girl who was suspended upside down while strapped in her car seat in the rear row of the Honda Odyssey.
The 51 year old Copes told the Asbury Park Press that with smoke pouring out of the minivan’s engine he was afraid that the car could explode without warning.
Obtaining a knife from another bystander, Copes squeezed through a small opening into the third seat of the Odyssey and freed the little girl from her car seat, moving her to a safer location until help arrived on scene.
The Toms River Police Department and the Township Council presented Copes, who sustained cuts and bruises in the rescue, with the Good Samaritan Award tonight in honor of his heroic actions.
Also present was the husband of the deceased, Dovid Eisdorfer, who wheeled his daughter in for the ceremony in her stroller, covered with a pink blanket.
Eisdorfer embraced Copes and presented him with a token gift of thanks. He read aloud from a card that he presented to Copes which bore the words, “this is just a token of my appreciation. Words could never describe the gratitude I have for your selflessness. You risked your life to save another. The soul of man is G-d’s candle. Thank you for saving my world; whoever saves a life it is as if he saved an entire world.”
Copes spoke briefly, thanking his wife, his family and the local township and sharing a few thoughts about that fateful day.
“March 9 is definitely going to be with me forever,” said Copes. “I would just hope that anybody else came to a situation like that they ,would do the same thing to recover another human being.”

Appeals court hears Amit Borenstein Jail death arguments
APP reports The Amit Borenstein case has returned before a federal judge, attorneys say the legal errors were made during the trial "The 2010 death of Amit Bornstein in Monmouth County Jail returned before federal judges last week as attorneys made oral arguments in the ongoing appeal of his family's wrongful death lawsuit. Three judges for the U.S. Third Circuit Court of Appeals in Philadelphia heard the case Thursday.
A federal jury in March 2015 determined corrections officers at Monmouth County Jail did not violate Bornstein's civil rights when they scuffled with him twice before he died in custody in 2010. Bornstein's father initially sued both Monmouth County as well as Correct Care Solutions, LLC, the vendor that provides medical care at the jail, alleging civil rights violations and negligence."
Monmouth County Sheriff's Office deputies picked Bornstein up on warrants on July 29, 2010 for not showing up at court for cases involving pot possession, stealing from cars and a traffic ticket.
Hours later, Bornstein, who lived in Marlboro, was dead. His family and friends claimed jail officers beat him twice, then medical staff did not properly care for his injuries. Jail officers and medical staff say their actions were proper. They testified at trial that Bornstein died of severe and undiagnosed heart disease caused by his use of anabolic steroids.
Bornstein's attorneys say the following legal errors were made during the trial:
Defense attorneys referenced allegations that Bornstein used anabolic steroids. Attorneys for Monmouth County and CCS both argued in appeal documents that the reference was relevant to Bornstein's cause of death.
The jury did not get to consider if Monmouth Jail corrections officers acted with "deliberate indifference" to Bornstein’s medical needs. Monmouth County's attorney argued it was not an error because Bornstein's attorneys never brought up the issue in court documents ahead of the trial and did not properly make the case during the trial.
Bornstein's medical expert, Dr. Michael Baden, was not allowed to give his opinion about CCS staff and medical negligence. CCS attorneys say Bornstein’s attorneys made a strategic decision not to use Baden as an expert on jail medical care.
The jury did not get to decide if CCS was negligent. CCS attorneys say the judge's decision was proper. read more at APP.com
