Jewish History soundbites

Rav Chaim Ozer Grodzinski (1863-1940) was one of the greatest rabbinic leaders of the 20th century. A recent book by Rabbi Dovid Kamenetsky profiles some of the aspects of his leadership of Russian and world Jewry through the first decade of the century. One of the highlighted facets of his activities is his dominant role in various rabbinical conferences between the years 1907-1910.

There was the attempt to establish the Knesses Yisrael organization, which was the first ever attempt at the organization of traditional Jewry in Russia. Then there was the Vilna conference of 1909, which was a preliminary meeting to the rabbinical commission in St. Petersburg which was to be called by the Czarist government the following year. Also in 1909 was the Bad Homburg conference, which laid the foundation for the founding of Agudas Yisroel. Finally there was the famous rabbinical conference in St. Petersburg in 1910.

In all of these gatherings, Rav Chaim Ozer's organizational ability, leadership and practical approach led him to be one of the central figures at each subsequent meeting. This firmly established him as one of the primary leaders of Russian Jewry.

Petirah of  Rabbi Osher Lemmel Ehrenreich Z"L , the Menahel of Bais Yaakov of Boro Park for over five decades, He was 93 years old.

Hamodia: Rabbi Ehrenreich was born in Brezna, Czechoslovakia, in 1928. He immigrated to the United States in 1934, and attended Yeshiva Torah Vodaas, where he was influenced by its legendary Menahel, Harav Shraga Feivil Mendlowitz, zt”l. He later learned in Bais Medrash elyon under Harav Reuven Grozovsky, zt”l.

He began his long career in chinuch as the assistant principal in Yeshiva and Mesivta of Brighton, and was then recruited by Rabbi Moshe Sherer to accept the position of the fledgling Bais Yaakov of Boro Park, which had only 100 students at the time.

As the school grew, Rabbi Ehrenreich adjusted to make it a place where all would feel comfortable. During his tenure, the school expanded to approximately 2000 students, with families from many backgrounds choosing the school as the place for their daughters to get a genuine Torah education.

The levayah is scheduled for Wednesday morning at 11:00 a.m. in front of Bais Yaakov of Boro Park at 46th Street corner 14th Avenue.

 1) Given that it is at the least debatable that the state has not provided a thorough and efficient education in Lakewood from the time I filed Alcantara in 2014 until 2019 when the record was closed and given that a T & E claim is the only cause of action that the NJ Supreme Court has recognized in a school funding case, why is the BOE opposing the necessary element in proving my case?

2) What will the BOE say to our children who will likely not be able to afford a home in Lakewood because of the BOE's mounting debt, which the statute requires to be repaid out of future state aid, essentially shifting the state's share of school funding to Lakewood taxpayers unless a court unless we win? (The state has got a good thing going.)

 3) When you speak about going to Trenton have you considered that we have heard for two decades that our local leaders are working with Trenton, and have you discounted the likely scenario that the legislature is not exactly inclined to help Lakewood and perhaps will eventually remove the two percent tax increase cap from towns owning more that $50 million in debt or some amount to make sure that Lakewood pays?
