A minyan with no home

One of the oldest minyanim in Lakewood finds itself with no home. The minyan has been bounced around from place to place over the years, a shul in exile. Known as "Avreichim" its from the old heimish minyanim in the heart of Lakewood. For years it was housed in the Lakewood cheder building primarily as a shabbos minyan. Many of the Rabbonim across Lakewood today were former mispalelim in this mikdash me'at. The shul had purchased a property on the corner of 10th street and  Clifton Avenue, due to a lack of funds or other reasons the minyan did not build a new home. When the Cheder building was demolished the minyan was practically homeless moving around various buildings in the neighborhood, currently the minyan is housed in one of the yeshiva buildings. An opportunity arose and a few selfless mispalelim took upon themselves to finally build a brand new building on the lot they've owned for many years. Zoning and variance  approvals were granted, plans were drawn up, money was raised and construction began. The foundation was dug and concrete was to be poured early in the morning. At midnight  the night before  a local Bais Din issued an IKUL on the construction after a neighbor complained. The Bais Din apparently did not speak to any of the Avreichim members prior to issuing the IKUL and an ad hoc din Torah took place at 2 am a mere 4 hours before the pouring of the foundation. Not being able to stop the cement trucks the decision was made to let them pour but construction must stop until further action is taken by the self imposed Bais din. A well connected askan got involved and threatened to have the zoning variances for the shul revoked through his connections and deep pockets.
That threat is laughable since there is no way to revoke a variance once it has been granted but shows the bully tactics used by these askanim who are drunk with power. It shows how you can use a Bais Din at your disposal, or politicians who are beholden to you, to bully people and get what you want. The halt in construction has caused a great financial loss to the shul. The shul was already there before and the plans were approved. To this day the foundation sits empty and once again a  powerful and well connected askan prevents a shul from being built. A stab in the heart of Lakewood literally and figuratively.

Vuss meint a schtickle?

A misinterpretation of the yiddish word "Shtickle" which means a small amount has caused Jackson township officials to file complaints and for an investigation with the Department of Justice and the NJ Attorney General over  remarks in a Agudah convention video regarding the Lakewood housing crisis.  Rabbi Lefkowitz called on members of the Orthodox community to become “schtickle pioneers” willing to settle in outlying areas that don’t currently have the same ready access to synagogues, yeshivas and kosher markets that make enclaves like Lakewood so convenient and attractive for Orthodox families.A local news site translated the word shtickle to mean moving to second class areas. APP reports The council believes the comment are evidence of neighborhood "blockbusting" efforts, but an Orthodox official says the comments are being misinterpreted. For those of you who remember, a little over 5 years ago, I along with a few fed up individuals decided to bring awareness to the inside deals and favors in our Township that we felt were hurting us all. We were fighting against an entrenched system. Perhaps I was a little naive in believing that those that were helping us also wanted change for the better. I was wrong. There were just too many factions of people that had their own needs in mind.
We accomplished a little. There is a little more transparency. Unfortunately, along with that came a feeling of total despair and abandonment. The feeling that nothing can be done set in.
Now we are at the final crossroads. Everything that I discussed in 2010 has come to pass. Massive tax increases, lack of services, life altering traffic and our community being given an awful reputation among neighboring towns.
I had hoped that we would be able to put a stop to all the games that are hurting us all a long time ago. Hope is no longer an option. Action must be taken. As much as I hated getting involved in our local politics, I no longer see any other option.

When I ran against Bob Singer in 2010 there was a faction of Yeshiva haters that tried to turn my effort into their agenda. Some people affiliated with BMG that benefit from their connections also tried to make me look like I am out to hurt my own Alma Mater. Nothing was ever further from the truth. I wanted to see the Yeshiva prosper, and the town would have only gained from that prosperity. Unfortunately there were some donors /investors that felt threatened by the idea that they may not be able to personally benefit from a more honest transparent government.
Since Menashe Miller and Meir Lichtenstein have been in office our town has been used and abused by those that own them. We can no longer afford such a form of government. Those people that receive favors from them have gone too far. I was recently shown new plans for parts of town that developers will be getting our tax money and free land to help them build housing that will in turn cost us more in taxes. This is no longer acceptable and has to stop. I was given proof That one of our committee members has conspired to make money off of a lawsuit involving land deals at the taxpayers expense. Every day I am told new stories of corruption that make me dizzy........ These things can no longer go on. I am not the paradigm of honesty and integrity. I don't want to be the poster child for anything. I simply want my town back. I have lived here for almost 30 years. I saw the potential in this town to become a model yeshivacentric mecca while making a kiddush Hashem. All those expectations were ruined in the last ten years. We may be able to save it, but not with our current leadership.
I have as of now given up discussing the downtown. As much as I am still dismayed that a town would abandon such a valuable asset to criminals, I would like our leaders to know that now I will only be more emboldened to focus on the town as a whole instead.
Truth will win out this time.
Honesty will prevail, and we can still make Lakewood great. Not great again, great for the first time.

No mention of Lakewood in Hillary Clinton nominee acceptance speech at DNC 2016

This time around Hillary did not Mention Lakewood, NJ as a furniture manufacturing town, she gave the title to the state of Ohio instead. A few weeks ago at a rally in Atlantic city, NJ she criticized Donald Trump for buying furniture made in Turkey and not from Lakewood, NJ. Last night at the democratic convention speech she went after Donald Trump  "He also talks a big game about putting America First. Please explain to me what part of America First leads him to make Trump ties in China, not Colorado. Trump suits in Mexico, not Michigan. Trump furniture in Turkey, not Ohio."

One of the bochurim injured in a car accident at the Brick Lakewood border in June, thanked everyone for their tefillos in a letter posted on Matzav.com .

Many of you know me as Yehuda Nesanel ben Basha Baila, as you have been davening for me since the car accident at the beginning of June that almost took my life. Those in the medical field attest that the fact that I am writing this note at this juncture is miraculous. I say that it is thanks to all of your tefillos. I wish to express my heartfelt gratitude to Jews around the world, most of whom do not know me, who have davened for me.
It is deeply touching to hear that my name for Tehillim was spotted in shuls in Williamburg, Boro Park, the Five Towns, Lakewood, Yerushalayim and beyond.
Thank you for taking my plight to heart and pleading with Hashem to demonstrate His rachamim and send me a refuah. I feel blessed to have been able to bentch Gomel this past week. This has been a trying and challenging period in so many ways, but the selflessness of our caring nation and the warm sentiments expressed to me and my family will never be forgotten.
Thank you.

Sincerely,

Yehuda Nesanel ben Basha Baila

Rabbi clarifies his words "Shtickle pioneer"

Hamodia reports- Rabbi Lefkowitz  of Agudah offered a clarification of his words in this video for those unfamiliar with the term, in wake of the uproar. “Someone, who does not speak Yiddish, misled the public. ‘Shtickle pioneer,’ in Yiddish, means that the pioneer is a small pioneer and adverse to risk. ‘Groise pioneer’ means that you are a big pioneer and ready to take big risks,” he said.
LAKEWOOD, NJ - Representatives of Agudath Israel of America sharply denied and rebutted accusations of an organized strategy of “blockbusting” and the existence of a “decree” to members of the Orthodox community to move into towns surrounding Lakewood, leveled by officials of Jackson Township.

“Jackson Township’s complaint about a ‘blockbusting-style plan’ and ‘decree’ ostensibly plotted by representatives of Agudath Israel of America is totally groundless,” said Rabbi Avi Schnall, Agudah’s New Jersey director. “There is no such plan, no such decree. Encouraging members of Agudath Israel’s growing constituency to consider affordable housing opportunities in new neighborhoods is simple sound advice.”

The township’s claims are based on statements made by Rabbi Shmuel Lefkowitz, vice president of community services for the Agudah at the organization’s annual convention this past fall, in a talk regarding the housing crisis among Orthodox Jews in the New York area. In the recording, he encouraged young families to be “schtickle pioneers” and buy less-expensive homes outside settled areas of Jewish life, identifying several towns around Lakewood, including Jackson.

A local news outlet’s mistranslation of the Yiddish word “shtickle,” which actually means a little bit of something, and a general misunderstanding of the context in which it was used in the recorded address, became the basis for the claims.

The Shore News Network wrote an extensive article based on Rabbi Lefkowitz’s speech, identifying the term as meaning “something of second class.”

“The term ‘schtickle pioneer,’ as it pertains to Lakewood, means to settle in second-class surrounding towns, in the hopes that enough growth would ‘turn around’ those communities,” said the article.

Rabbi Lefkowitz offered a clarification of his words for those unfamiliar with the term, in wake of the uproar.

The report labeled Rabbi Lefkowitz’s statements a “decree” to the Orthodox public to settle en masse in the towns he referred to. The report was circulated by the grassroots group, Jackson Strong, and was subsequently referenced by Jackson’s Township Council president at a meeting held Tuesday night, pointing to the remarks as evidence of a “cohesive attempt” to “take over” the town, labeling the statements “reprehensible.”

“To misrepresent remarks made by a prominent community leader… shows that there is a strong anti-chareidi agenda being spewed by Jackson Township’s politicians,” said Rabbi Schnall. Jackson’s mayor, Michael Reina, issued a joint statement together with Mr. Nixon calling the recording “troubling” and announcing that they had contacted federal and state authorities to review the recording.

Rabbi Schnall called the idea of an investigation by authorities “a farce” and said he was certain the Justice Department will respond accordingly.

“For the leaders of Jackson’s government bodies to make such rash claims stokes the already contentious feelings of many in the community,” said Rabbi Schnall. “Elected officials are held to a higher standard… I think the council would have a hard time taking these steps if they were directed at any other minority group.”
A request for comment from Hamodia to the Jackson Township went unanswered.

The present stir is the most recent in what many have identified as a concerted effort by elements in the town, which borders Lakewood, to resist a growing influx of Orthodox homebuyers. Similar sentiments have surfaced in other communities neighboring Lakewood, such as Toms River, where its mayor, Thomas Kelaher, referred to an influx of Orthodox homebuyers as an “invasion.”

Attorney Roman Storzer, who is representing Yeshivah Naos Yaakov in a court battle with Ocean Township, told Hamodia that the level of anti-Orthodox animus in towns around Lakewood was a “sad state of affairs.”

“There is a lot of fear and bigotry and a desire to keep them [Orthodox Jews] sequestered in the places that they already live,” he said.

Agudah response: A “SHTICKLE” RIDICULOUS

Jackson Township’s complaint about a “block-busting style plan” and “decree” ostensibly plotted by representatives of Agudath Israel of America (Shore News Network, July 27) is totally groundless.  There is no such plan, no such decree. Encouraging (see video) members of Agudath Israel’s growing constituency to consider affordable housing opportunities in new neighborhoods is simple sound advice. Agudath Israel encourages all to live as good neighbors, with respect, tolerance, and sensitivity. We urge the local New Jersey municipalities to practice total fairness in housing and for houses of worship and schools. Homeowners deserve to be free from harassment and pressure tactics, and prospective buyers are entitled to seek affordable housing without being discriminated against because of their religion.

Lakewood dosent deserve mandated bussing

All across NJ, school districts provide state mandated busing for private schools but when it comes to Lakewood there is a different narrative. Its considered pandering, its undermining to underprivileged children, more misconstrued facts  and misinformation spread about the Orthodox community. They dont pay taxes they dont deserve courtesy busing, they are not an underprivileged minority bla bla. Another ignorant article by the "experts". The money allocated for the consortium is mandated already by the state. The bill only removes the control of the busing from the district to a consortium. The article calls on the Gov to veto it "Singer’s pander to the
Orthodox community in Lakewood undermines New Jersey’s urgent quest to provide equitable educational opportunities to underprivileged children. Gov. Christie, get out that veto pen."
