Some boys day camps begin

Cant we all be on the same page?
Day camp begins to the relief of many working parents whose boys were home all week, the boys have finally started day camp. Other camps wont start for another week since its hard to get staff as the yeshivos finish the zman on Rosh chodesh. The camps all go for 4 weeks, meaning others will have the last week of summer vacation off. These different schedules between boys and girls camps make it difficult for working parents juggling work schedule and family vacation.

Team Lakewood has raised over $400,000 for Bike 4 chai. They will be biking to camp on Wednesday and Thursday August 3rd and 4th. Our objective is to raise at least $400,000 by then and we hope you will help us reach this goal. We will bike 180 miles through 3 states to Camp Simcha, an extraordinary overnight camp that gives children with cancer a vacation from sickness that restores their spirits and renews their determination to fight! The ride won't be easy, but neither is life for a child with cancer or other serious illness. Camp Simcha and its sister camp, Camp Simcha Special, are Chai Lifeline's flagship programs. Every year these two camps offer 420 children a chance to forget about illness and just be kids again.

We hoped it wouldn't come down to this but once again 5 weeks before school starts there are a number of girls who were not accepted into high school. Last year  9 girls first got accepted  3 months into the school year there was an uproar. The hope was this year would be different  We heard "The speech" and progress was made to change the acceptance system. Before Pesach someone took out ads in various media outlets announcing all girls have been accepted and placed in school. Sadly that is not the case, its not as much as last year but there are girls who still dont know where and when they will get in.

LRRC and Lakewood Recreation Sponsor an HPV Immunization Education and Awareness Event

Jeffrey Shapiro, supervisor of Lakewood Recreation, recently organized a special event for the LRRC (Lakewood Resource and Referral Center) as part of its HPV* Immunization Education and Awareness campaign. The event focused on the Lakewood Recreation soccer teams at the John F. Patrick Sports Complex, Oak and Vine streets, Lakewood.

About 150 children and adults received information about HPV vaccines, were entertained by two illusionists, and took home free backpacks, funded by the CDC. The LRRC distributed about 100 backpacks, designed with LRRC and CHEMED (Center for Health Education, Medicine and Dentistry) logos and sporting the message “Support the Fight against Cancer.” The backpacks contained HPV Immunization information sheets in Spanish and English.

Sue Grill-Levy, R.N., explained the dangers of the HPV virus, how it is contracted, and how the vaccination can prevent this disease. Oscar Orellana, one of the coaches for the Lakewood Recreation Soccer team and a guidance counselor at the Ella G. Clarke elementary school translated the presentation into Spanish.

Orellana, who has witnessed the effort that school nurse Nadine Rickards has put into promoting the HPV vaccinations to the students, feels it is very important to reach out to and educate the Hispanic community about the HPV vaccination.
Illusionists James Gavilanes and Miles Thorn entertained the audience, using magic to emphasize the importance of HPV Immunization. Gavilanes, of Hispanic descent, also made his presentation bi-lingual, ensuring the participation and understanding of everyone in the audience.

After the event, 42 parents said they are planning to get an HPV vaccination for their child. Twenty-five more requested that the LRRC contact them to set up an immunization appointment.

Mayer Hoberman, executive director of social services, said, “Our goal in holding events such as this one, is to gain support for immunization within the community and to promote the LRRC and CHEMED as the resources for good health.”

For more information about immunizations or to schedule an immunization appointment, call Tzipporah Zar at CHEMED, 732-364-2144, Ext. 282. For information about the LRRC, contact Mechie Nebenzahl, at 732-942-9292, Ext.112 or mnebenzahl@lrrcenter.org.

*HPV is a virus transmitted through intimate skin-to-skin contact and can infect both males and females, and lead to cancer in both sexes. A vaccine for HPV, licensed by the FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration), has been deemed safe and is highly recommended by the FDA and the CDC. Since vaccinations began in 2006, “the amount of HPV infections in teen girls decreased by 56 percent.” (Taken from CDC.gov)

A shtickle ignorant

A Charedi basher shows off his total ignorance in a blog post as he once again bashes frum people and Lakewood. He starts off his post with this sentence "The truth is that I know very little about the village of Lakewood, New Jersey". He than spews serious accusations of blockbusting which was reported on some other news sites. The Agudah and others have strongly responded to the baseless, groundless and uninformed accusations but the blogger didnt do his homework. Quick to the trigger he accuses those buying in outlying neighborhoods  as a Blockbusting tactic. The Blogger than lectures Lakewood "in my view, if this aggressive tactic is being countered to the extent that the Federal government has been asked to get involved - then I think it should stop.  Might (via a large and now powerful religious group) does not make right. It might instead be making a Chilul HaShem". The first sentence is the only truth of the article he knows nothing but an opportunity to paint Lakewood in bad light is just to hard to pass up.
